Balanced Long Beach State teams set for the biggest race of the year.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's men's and women's cross country programs are set for the Big West Championships coming up this Saturday at the Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif.
The Men's 8K will start the day at 8:45 a.m. with the women's 6K to follow, with live results available via the conference through Finished Results.
Long Beach State's men have been led twice by senior Trevor Stangle and once by freshman Tyler Spencer through their three meets this season, with Spencer and Stangle both finishing in the Top 15 in their last competition, the Highlander Invitational. Spencer's 24:54 8K in Riverside was a collegiate PR. The young Beach squad also has seen good results from newcomers Raymon Ornelas, Ricky Cardenas and Gavin Korby on the year as the team looks to improve on last year's finish in the Big West Championship.
On the women's side, Long Beach State's top finisher from a season ago returns in Mikayla Florez. A senior, Florez was the top finisher for Long Beach State in the opening meet of the year, and will be joined by one other senior in Alexis Ceballos at the conference championship.
Others to keep an eye on in the coming meet include a pair of freshman in Leslie Diaz and Sofia Ramos who have been among the scoring runners in earlier meets this season.
Following the conclusion of the Big West Championship, Long Beach State is scheduled to compete in the NCAA Western Regional, held this year in Sacramento, Calif. on November 9.
