No. 6 Long Beach State Moves to 1-1 in Conference Play With Loss To UC Santa Barbara
LBSU can't overcome a 5-2 first quarter deficit to the No. 7 Gauchos.
Santa Barbara, Calif. - In a rematch of ranked opponents, UC Santa Barbara used an explosive first quarter to fend off Long Beach State and won by a score of 8-5 over the Beach.
UC Santa Barbara got off to a hot start and led 5-2 after the first period. The score remained the same heading into half time thanks to stellar defense by both teams in the second quarter.
It was another defensive battle in the third quarter as the only goal scored was on a penalty shot by Nolan McConnell to cut the deficit to 5-3.
UCSB turned on the offense in the final period as the Gauchos scored three goals and put the game out of reach.
Five different players accounted for the five goals scored by Long Beach State. Jacob Fujioka, Mitchell Holden, Duncan Lynde, Nolan McConnell and Keegan Wicken all scored for the Beach.
Goalie Thomas Freeman finished the game with eight saves and two steals. It was the third game in a row in which Freeman finished with eight saves.
Long Beach State will be back home to face No. 3 USC at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center on Saturday at 1 p.m.
