No. 6 Men's Water Polo Split First Two Games of Triton Invitational

Long Beach State came out with a win over Redlands (9-5), but lost a tight battle between No. 7 UCSB (6-7) in Day 1 of the Triton Invitational.
Senior Dimitrios Lappas led the Beach with three goals, and sophomore Jacob Fujioka followed with two in the win over Redlands.
The 49ers were down 1-0 after the first quarter after Redland's sophomore Kevin Chapa scored the lone goal.
LBSU came back in the second, scoring three and blanking the Bulldogs. Lappas, sophomore Duncan Lynde and Fujioka provided the offense.
From there, the Beach added three more goals in each of the last two quarters to outscore the Bulldogs in the second half 6-4.
Pavo Ljepopio had seven total saves for LBSU, while Redland's goalie Chris Sekula had 12.
The second match was a tight fight between the No. 6 and No. 7 ranked teams. The Beach were blanked in the third quarter, which became the difference in the game.
Both teams started the match even at five after the first half. Redshirt freshman Chandler Kaltenbach, Lynde and junior Patrick Goodenough all scored to end the first quarter tied at three.
Senior Josh Tice and freshman Keegan Wicken added on two more in the second, but so did the Gauchos.
Freshman Borislav Jovanovic came up big for the Gauchos with one goal in each of the first three quarters, including the only goal scored in the third quarter to go up 6-5 over the Beach.
Both teams had support from their seniors in the fourth quarter with Lappas scoring for the 49ers and Liam Gaughan for UCSB.
The Beach couldn't find any extra offense, however, and lost the battle in the end.
LBSU will continue with the second day of the Triton Invitational tomorrow against Loyola Marymount at noon, and Pacific at 4 p.m. Both matches will be at the Triton pool.
