Beach Water Polo Come Up Even At Triton Invitational

Long Beach State concluded the Triton Invitational with a 2-2 record after splitting two games on the second day.
The roster newcomers came up big for the 49ers in this tournament, giving the Beach a huge lift to rout No. 14 LMU 11-8 to start the day.
There were three hat tricks from the Beach boys, two from players that redshirted last season.
Redshirt freshman Austin Stevenson and freshman Keegan Wicken scored a goal in each of the last three quarters for the Beach. Senior Dimitrios Lappas picked up where he left off yesterday with another three goals, and sophomore Duncan Lynde added two more.
LBSU came out with a strong 3-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Lions answered back scoring five goals in the second to go up 7-6 at the half. In the end, the Beach defense picked up while the offense proceeded to outscore LMU 6-2 in the second half.
Senior Pavo Ljepopio made 13 saves in the match, including some crucial fourth quarter saves to help secure the 49ers lead.
This is the second year in a row that LBSU has defeated the Lions in the Triton Invitational.
The match against No. 5 Pacific was a different story.
The 49ers took the lead early on with Lynde scoring the first goal of the game but Pacific tied it up 2-2, and the Beach found themselves behind the rest of the match.
Redshirt freshman Chandler Kaltenbach and Lynde scored a pair of goals each while Stevenson and senior Zacchary Kappos had one goal apiece. Ljepopio registered another 13 saves in the match.
Lappas and Lynde were the high scorers for the Beach this weekend with Lappas scoring a total of seven goals and Lynde with six over four matches. Ljepopio had a total of 40 saves this tournament.
The 49ers travel to Los Angeles, Calif. for the UCLA Invitational next Saturday, Sept. 12.
