49ers Beat UC San Diego And Finishes The NorCal Tournament With A Sudden Death Loss To UC Santa Barbara

Stockton, Calif. - No. 6 Long Beach State Men's Water Polo bounced back from yesterday's loss by beating UC San Diego this first thing Sunday morning. Junior Nolan McConnell came out with a bang and scored the first goal of the game. UC San Diego answered back immediately with a goal, but then junior Ricardo Guimares threw another goal in the cage to keep the lead. McConnell scored again and senior Nick Rascon threw one in as well to end the quarter with a 4-3 lead.
By halftime, McConnell scored his third goal and senior Dimitrios Lappas scored his first goal of the game to bring the lead at 6-5. Long Beach State came into the 3rd quarter with a strong defense. Goalie Pavo Ljepopio held off the Triton defense by saving 3 goals and only letting 1 go by.
In the fourth quarter, Long Beach State pumped up the offense. Senior Dan Matulis scored his 2nd goal while Lappas, Rascon, and McConnell all added to the scoreboard to close the game at a 12-9 victory.
The next match against UC Santa Barbara was an exciting match for the 49ers. The first two quarters consisted of goals flying back and forth between both teams. Guimares and Lappas both scored goals on 6/5 in the second quarter to end halftime at 6-7.
The 49ers came back strong in the 4th quarter and with the help of McConnell scoring 2 goals and tying the game at 11-11 to go into overtime. In the first quarter of overtime, UC Sana Barbara scored the first goal towards the end of the quarter, but sophomore Patrick Goodenough stepped up and drew an ejection and scored to tie the game at 12-12 to go into second overtime. Junior Zacchary Kappos showed no mercy in the second quarter of overtime.
The gauchos scored again, but our 49ers obtained a 5 meter penalty shot and Kappos took the initiative to shoot and score and finished the quarter at 13-13 into sudden death. Unfortunately in sudden death, the guachos earned a penalty shot and scored t to end the game at 14-13.
Next weekend, the 49ers will have an alumni game day at the CSULB Pool on Saturday Sept. 27th at noon. Go Beach!
