LONG BEACH-- No. 7-ranked UC Irvine (23-6, 5-4 Big West) took the rubber game of the three-game series at No. 16-ranked Long Beach State (19-14, 2-4 Big West), taking the Sunday finale 4-1 on a 92 degree day.

Daniel Bibona (5-1) went the first 6.2 innings for UC Irvine, giving up a single run on six hits for the win. Christian Bergman went the next 1.1 scoreless innings, before Eric Pettis notched his eighth save with a scoreless ninth.

Jake Thompson (1-4), nearly dodged trouble in the fifth, but got into trouble in the sixth, exiting the game as the Anteaters upped their lead to 4-1. Nick Vincent kept it close pitching 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing a single hit, while striking out three.

UCI was able to load the bases in the fifth, as Thompson struck out Francis Larson, before getting a groundout to keep it at 2-1. But an inning later, Aaron Lowenstein's single off the glove of first baseman Shane Peterson dribbled into shallow right field, scoring two runners and giving the Anteaters a 4-1 lead.

Thompson left a batter later, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 5.1 innings.

UC Irvine took a 2-0 lead in the second paced by two bloop hits to start things off. Jason Corder tied the game with a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1.

The home stand concludes on Tuesday against Pepperdine at 6:30 p.m during the 50th Anniversary of the first collegiate game at Blair Field. During pre-game festivities, all-conference third baseman Jack Brick and former Head Coach John McConnell, will represent LBSU, while the family of Long Beach CC Coach Joe Hicks, his son, Tom and wife, Joyce will represent the junior college in town.
