Game Two
LONG BEACH-- No. 6-ranked Long Beach State (16-3) swept a doubleheader and the series from No. 11-ranked UCLA (10-8), defeating the Bruins 3-2 with a three-run ninth in the opener, before defeating UCLA 10-3 in the nightcap. It was the Dirtbags seventh-straight victory of the season, and their second seven-game win streak of the season.
Vance Worley (3-0) remained perfect on the season with a complete game six hitter, as he struck out nine and walked one in game two.
In the opener, TJ Mittelstaedt tied the game with a two-run double and scored the winning run on an error by third baseman Jermaine Curtis, who could not field the inning ending groundball with Mittelstaedt at third.
In game two, LBSU took a 4-0 lead in the second paced by RBI doubles by Steve Tinoco and Travis Howell and a two-run single by Jason Corder. Shane Peterson made it 7-1 in the fifth with a two-run single, as Gavin Brooks (1-1) gave up the first seven runs.
LBSU no-hit the Bruins for 10.1 consecutive innings of the doubleheader.
In game one, Mittelsteadt's one-out double tied the game off of starter Charles Brewer (2-2) in the ninth, before Mittelstaedt scored on Curtis' error to give LBSU their fifth-straight series. Murphy went 8.2 innings, scattering 12 hits, as LBSU left six runners in scoring position heading into the ninth inning.
John Hill was a home run short of the cycle, going 3-for-4, while classmate Jonathan Jones added three hits, including the game-tying run in the ninth.
Jake Thompson dodged trouble most of the early part of the afternoon, loading the bases twice over the first and second innings, only to surrender one run, before exiting in the fifth. After retiring seven in a row, be put two more runners on in the fifth, as reliever Adam Wilk bailed out the Dirtbags by catching the final out trying to steal, keeping it at 1-0 in favor of the Bruins.
An unearned run made it 2-0 in the eighth. UCLA did not have a hit after the second as David Brown (1-0) got his first collegiate win with 1.1 scoreless innings.
The Dirtbags take Easter off before hosting Harvard on Monday at 6:30 p.m. and playing at Pepperdine on Tuesday at 3 p.m. LBSU starting last Friday night will play 13 times over 16 days.
