LONG BEACH-- No. 6-ranked Long Beach State (12-3), off to their best start since the 2004 Super Regional Team, will host Poly High graduate and Hall of Famer, Tony Gwynn and his San Diego State Aztecs (10-7 prior to playing Southern Utah tonight) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Blair Field.
The Dirtbags will then play No. 11-ranked UCLA in a three-game series on Friday and Saturday. LBSU plays in Westwood on Friday at 6 p.m. before hosting a doubleheader on Saturday starting 1 p.m.
LBSU is coming off a three-game sweep of USC this past weekend in which Shane Peterson went 9-for-13 and raised his team-best average to .431, with a team-best 22 RBIs. Third baseman Taylor Krick is batting .351, while rightfielder Jason Corder chips in at a .423 clip in nine games.
The Aztecs are coming off a 3-0 week against BYU to open up Mountain West play.
Freshman centerfielder Jonathan Jones, who made his first three starts this past weekend, is batting an even .300 with game-winning hits in each of the last two games, while freshman catcher John Hill is 5-for-10 in his collegiate career as a backup to senior Travis Howell.
Relievers Nick Vincent (3-0, 1 save) and Bryan Shaw (0-0, 4 saves) have yet to allow an earned run out of the bullpen as the pitching staff has produced a 2.41 ERA.
RHP Jon Berger (1-2, 6.59) will pitch for the Aztecs against RHP Tyler Topp (0-1, 2.57), who will be making his third Tuesday start of the season.
All-time, the 49ers are 42-75-1 against the Aztecs, but 15-8 since the Dirtbags took stock in 1989.
The Dirtbags also announced today that they are in the process of contacting all of the players from the 1998 College World Series team, which will be honored prior to the Sunday, April 13 game against UC Irvine and former USC Coach Mike Gillespie.
