Freshman Jason Gerfers earned Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing Long Beach State’s first complete game as a freshman since 2022 to clinch a series win over Hawai’i.
LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach State freshman right-hander Jason Gerfers has been named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 16 after delivering a complete-game performance in the Dirtbags' 2-1 series-clinching win over Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Sunday at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Gerfers became the first Dirtbags freshman to throw a complete game since Juaron Watts-Brown recorded a shutout against UC Riverside Highlanders on May 8, 2022. His nine-inning effort also marked the first complete game by a Long Beach State pitcher this season and earned him his first collegiate victory.
Making his fifth start of the season and sixth appearance overall, Gerfers allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out seven and walking two over 123 pitches. He finished with nine fly-ball outs and 10 ground-ball outs, limiting Hawai'i to a .133 batting average across 30 at-bats.
The freshman opened the outing by retiring the first nine batters he faced through three innings before Hawai'i pushed across its lone run in the fourth. He responded by stranding runners in scoring position in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings, including ending the game with the tying run at third base.
Through six appearances this season, Gerfers owns a 4.05 ERA with 22 strikeouts across 26.2 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .209 batting average. He has made five starts, allowed just one home run all season and now leads the Dirtbags with one complete game.
Gerfers is the first Long Beach State player to earn weekly conference honors this season and the first Dirtbag pitcher recognized since Kellan Montgomery was honored on April 14, 2025.
