DIRTBAGS CAN'T COMPLETE SWEEP OF RICE

LONG BEACH - No. 6-ranked Rice (1-2) edged No. 13-ranked Long Beach State (2-1) 3-1 in the Sunday finale, after the Dirtbags took the first two games of the series.
Matt Langwell (1-0) pitched 6.2 innings for Rice, allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out three. He gave it over to the bullpen with a 3-1 lead in the seventh.
Zach Barger broke up the no-hitter with one out in the fifth, launching his first home run to center to make it 3-1. LBSU loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to tie it.
Bryan Price after walking the bases full in the seventh, retired the final seven batters of the game for the save.
Rice took an early 3-0 lead on Jake Thompson (0-1). Thompson went the first six innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits. He used 76 pitches to strike out two and walk one.
Thompson had not pitched in a varsity game since his sophomore season in 2006, leaving high school early.
Rice scored two unearned runs in the fourth to lead 2-0. A fielding error by second baseman Jason Tweedy led off the inning, before a double, sacrifice fly and a groundout led to Rice's first lead of the weekend.
A sacrifice fly in the fifth then made it 3-0, as a Thompson balked moved Adam Zornes to third following a leadoff single and sacrifice bunt.
Defense was a key component to keeping Rice off the scoreboard. Centerfielder Chris Nelson ended a potential rally in the third laying out in left center field to rob Rick Hague of an RBI double and end the inning at 0-0. Third baseman Brandon Godfrey dove, got up and threw home in the ninth to keep it at 3-1.
Today's game was delayed an hour due to early morning rain in the area.
LBSU continues their eight-game home stand on Tuesday when they host San Diego and next weekend when host Wichita State for a three-game series.
