LONG BEACH-- No. 17-ranked University of San Diego (2-3) scored five runs early and then held on to defeat No. 10-ranked Long Beach State (2-2) 5-3 on Tuesday night. LBSU sent the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth inning, but could not get either across.
Ricardo Pecina kept the Dirtbags off balance for the first four-plus innings, leaving with a 5-1 lead in the fifth. A sacrifice fly made it 5-2, as Pecina scattered three hits, but did not figure in the decision. Reliever Matt Couch (1-1) got the win in relief.
Danny Espinosa had two doubles in the game for LBSU, scoring on an RBI single from Taylor Krick in the fourth to make it 5-1 and then again in the sixth on a Shane Peterson single to make it 5-3.
LBSU had just five hits. AJ Griffin pitched the final two scoreless innings for the save.
Torero Victor Sanchez hit a solo home run in the second to make it 1-0, before his two-run shot to left center made it 3-0 in the fourth. A two-run double by Kevin Muno chased Manny McElroy (0-1) from the game and made it 5-0 in the fourth, as McElroy gave up five runs on six hits over the first three and two-thirds.
Tyler Topp pitched four shutout innings of relief for the Dirtbags.
The Dirtbags next host No. 20-ranked Wichita State in a three-game series starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
