UC Irvine (7-5) beat No. 12 Long Beach State 8-5 (6-6) in the 11th place match Sunday at the UC Irvine Women's Water Polo Invitational at Corona del Mar High School after the 49ers fell 12-8 to Arizona State to open up the second day of competition. Lauren Sieprath had five goals for the 49ers on the day.
UC Irvine took a 3-1 lead with 26 seconds left in the second period, before the 49ers quickly answered back with a goal with two seconds remaining to cut UCI's lead to 3-2. The 49ers tied the match at 3-3 just 40 seconds into the third period, before a a 5-1 run made it 8-4 with 6:10 remaining in the match in favor of the Anteaters. Siprath had two of the 49ers five goals.
Long Beach State fell 12-8 to Arizona State to open up the second day of play. The 49ers fell behind 3-1 after the first period and trailed 6-3 at the half and nearly came back, before falling. Lauren Sieprath had three goals and Branwyn Lee added two in the loss.
Long Beach State cut the ASU lead to 10-8 with 6:00 remaining in the fourth period. The Sun Devils would score twice in the final five minutes to seal the 12-8 victory.
