Beach Sweep in Reverse Order LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State (15-15, 3-0 Big West) did it in reverse order in in the series finale, as starter Vance Worley converted the final four outs and preserved former closer Donnie Hume's (1-3) first win of the season, with a 3-2 win over UC Irvine (18-13, 0-3 Big West) on Sunday. Scott Bradley's two-run single in the sixth proved to be the difference, as it gave the sweeping the Dirtbags a 3-0 advantage. The Anteaters had a chance to take the lead in the eighth after Brett Andrade gave up a leadoff triple to Bryan Peterson with a 3-1 lead. A groundout followed to score Peterson and with runners on at second and third, Andrade got a foul popup before Worley came on with two outs and got Cody Cipriano to look at strike three to end the inning. After getting a line drive out and a groundout in the ninth, Worley gave up a two-out single to Zach Robinson before getting Peterson to look at strike three for the final out. Hume (1-3) had his longest career outing in just his second start of the season, before yielding to the bullpen with a 3-0 lead in the seventh. He went six and one third innings, giving up one run on two hits, as Andrew Liebel allowed his first inherited run of the season to score in the seventh to make it 3-1. But Liebel got two more groundouts to end the inning before yielding to Andrade in the eighth. Hume had pitched to just one over the minimum over the first six innings as The Beach built a 3-0 lead. Following a two-out walk, Evan Longoria blooped a single to center and chased UCI starter Scott Gorgen (3-2) from the game in the sixth. All-American closer Blair Erickson came on, and Shane Peterson worked a six-pitch walk to load the bases, before Bradley came through with a single through the right side to give LBSU a 3-0 advantage. Gorgen went the first five and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on four hits. Robert Perry led off the first with a shallow double to center, moved to third on groundout, before coming home on an Longoria sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 early. The Dirtbags will take next week off before returning to action to begin an eight-game roadtrip at San Diego State on April 11. |
