Beach Can't Hold 3-1 Lead in the Ninth

SAN DIEGO, CA-- Brock Ungricht completed a three-run ninth for host San Diego State (11-26) with a game-winning single, as the Aztecs nipped visiting Long Beach State (15-16) 4-3 in a Tuesday night affair.

Vance Worley (1-6), who was given a 3-1 lead in the ninth and seemingly got out of it with a strikeout of Lance Zawadzki, gave up the game tying single to Paul Smyth, before Ungright came through with the winning hit.

The Beach built a 2-0 lead early, as following a two-base error by second baseman Nick Romero, LBSU went up 1-0 in the first following an RBI single from Danny Espinosa. In the second, Jose Hernandez made it 2-0 with an RBI single.

LBSU then added an insurance run in the ninth off an RBI single from Robert Perry to lead 3-1, before two runs in the ninth tied it at 3-3 off of closer Vance Worley.

Scott Bradley kept LBSU in front in the eighth, as the first baseman threw out Curt Mendoza trying to extended a bloop single into a double. Paul Smyth's double in the seventh had cut the lead to 2-1, but Brett Andrade's strikeout ended things for the Aztecs.

Starter Scott Turmail worked out of trouble in the third, getting out of a no-out, two-runners on situation with two popups and a strikeout to keep it at a 2-0 lead. Turmail finished his night with three shutout innings to start, giving up just three hits, two on the infield, while striking out three.

Reliever Andrew Liebel dodged trouble in the fourth, loading the bases with two walks, before getting two of his career-high four strikeouts over his two innings of work as LBSU remained ahead 2-0.

Luke Sewell countered The Beach pitching staff with six innings of two-run baseball, giving up just four hits, and at one point retiring nine in a row in the middle innings.

The eight-game roadtrip continues on Thursday through Saturday when the team returns to Big West play and plays at CS Northridge. The weekday games are at 2 p.m. and the Saturday game is at 1 p.m.

Wednesday's Mike Weathers Show from Cirivello's at 4115 Viking Way in Long Beach will feature six players, Jared Hughes, Andrew Liebel, Scott Turmail, Danny Espinosa, Jordan Struble and Robert Perry.
