Matthews Pitches Six-Hitter

LONG BEACH, CA-- Tim Matthews (1-0) had his longest career outing on Sunday, combining on a six-hitter as No. 22-ranked Baylor (9-3) won the rubber game with host No. 15-ranked Long Beach State (10-7) 4-2 on Sunday.

Matthews retired seven and eight in a row on the day as the Dirtbags managed just six hits. Danny Espinosa led off the ninth with a single, chasing Matthews from the game, before Jeff Mandel got the final three outs for his fifth save and second for the weekend.

Matt Cline went 2-for-3 in the loss, hitting in his sixth straight contest, while Donnie Hume pitched three scoreless innings of relief, retiring the final nine batters in succession.

Tim Jackson's bases loaded, three-run double proved to be the deciding factor in the game, as it gave Baylor a 3-0 lead in the first. Loser Vance Worley (1-3) hit a batter and walked two others in the opening frame, and gave up four runs on four hits on the day.

The Dirtbags chipped away at the lead throughout the game as a Jose Hernandez' homer to left cut the Bear lead to 3-1 in the second, before an RBI groundout made it 3-2 in the third.

Baylor then added an insurance run in the sixth off an RBI single from Jeff Mandel to make it 4-2.

The Dirtbags hit the road for four games, at Loyola Marymount at 2 p.m. and to the University of Texas for three games starting on Friday. The Mike Weathers Show this week will feature Mike Malott and Matt Cline on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Cirivello's at 4115 Viking Way in Long Beach.
