Dirtbags Swept For Second Straight Weekend
Beach Begins Big West Play Having Lost Seven in a Row

March 26, 2006

BOX SCORE

FULLERTON, CA-- Despite loading the bases three times during the contest, Long Beach State (12-15) was swept for the second straight weekend, losing to No. 4-ranked CS Fullerton (20-7) 6-2 on Sunday afternon. The 49ers have now dropped seven in a row, tying the 2004 club for the longest losing streak since 1988 when LBSU went 14-45.

The Dirtbags used six pitchers on the day with Brett Andrade pitching a career-best two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, scattering two hits and striking out two in his best outing of the season. Vance Worley, the team's Sunday starter until today, pitched one and one third shutout innings to close it out. Jose Hernandez and Robert Perry had three hits a piece.

Dustin Miller (6-1) meanwhile pitched six and one-third innings, giving up one run on six hits and was the benefactor of four double play balls. Evan McArthur went 4-for-4 in the game, missing the cyle by a triple.

Back-to-back sacrifice flys put CS Fullerton on the board in the second to give them an early 2-0 lead. Three-straight walks, the final two by reliever Scott Turmail made it 3-0 with the bases loaded.

Donnie Hume (0-3) did not fair well in his first start of the season, after 10 relief appearances, pitching just one and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on four hits.

Two home runs in the third off of LBSU reliever Shane Peterson as part of a three-run rally made it 6-1. A home run by McArthur made it 4-1, before a two-run homer, following a walk, by Brandon Tripp made it 6-1.

Evan Longoria left the game for LBSU in the top of the fourth following a hit by pitch off the helmet.

The Dirtbags open up Big West play next weekend when they host UC Irvine for a three-game series beginning on Friday. LBSU has won 12 of 17 opening conference weekends. The Mike Weathers Show on Wednesday will feature Brett Andrade and Sean Boatright.
