Bret Lathrope enters his third season as an assistant coach with Long Beach State, where he assists Gavin Arroyo with player development, recruiting and administrative duties for the Men’s Water Polo program.
 
In Lathrope’s first season as an assistant, Long Beach State compiled a 22-6 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament after going unbeaten in Golden Coast Conference play. The Beach went 5-0 in the regular season and then won the GCC Tournament Championship behind GCC Player of the Year Rafael Real Vergara and GCC Tournament MVP, goaltender Andrej Bosanac.
 
Last season, the Beach finished the season with a 21-9 overall record and a 4-1 record in Golden Coast Conference Play.
 
Lathrope came to the Beach with seven prior years of collegiate coaching experience, most recently at UCLA as an assistant coach. Lathrope also has head coaching experience, leading the men’s program at MIT. While at MIT, Lathrope led the squad to a ranking as high as No. 2 at the Division III level and guided the team to its highest ever NWPC tournament finish.
 
As a student-athlete, Lathrope played for three seasons at UCLA from 2009 to 2011. He also serves as the technical director and coach with Los Angeles Premier Water Polo.
