Beach Opens Steve Scott Invitational With Strong Distance And Field Performances

Long Beach State opened the Steve Scott Invitational with multiple top finishes Friday.
IRVINE, Calif. -- Long Beach State opened competition Friday at the Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium with multiple top finishes in distance and field events during the first day of the two-day meet.
The women's squad was led by Kyra Miedecke, who placed fourth in the javelin with a mark of 44.26 meters (145 feet, 2 inches), tying the Long Beach State outdoor school record for sixth all-time.

In the women's 5000 meters, Brooke Willoughby earned a runner-up finish with a time of 17:47.77. Marikay Schwab placed sixth in 18:09.04, while Nataly Toledo finished 10th in 18:24.30.

Alyssa Tapanes picked up a first-place finish in the women's 1500 meters with a time of 4:38.40. Sharice Laygo ran 5:10.34, while Natasha King finished in 5:08.17.

In the field events, Abigail Gavrilovic placed seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 50.87m (166-10). Daneira Pellum cleared 1.54m (5-0 ½) in the high jump and placed 11th in the long jump with a mark of 5.46m (17-11). Jenna Morales recorded a jump of 5.38m (17-8), while Alexa Camacho posted a mark of 5.27m (17-3 ½).

Elisa Rodriguez added a fifth-place finish in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:17.93.

On the men's side, Cyprus Rice won the pole vault with a clearance of 5.12m (16-9 ½), while Ryan Gregory finished second with a mark of 4.82m (15-9 ¾).

Miles Jones highlighted the distance events with a first-place finish in the men's 1500 meters, running 3:44.89 to move into fourth place in program history. Max Ramirez also competed in the men's 1500 meters, finishing in 4:08.5.

In the men's 800 meters, Cameron Rhone placed fourth in Heat 1 with a time of 1:49.71. Lance Denhalter and Tarron Johnson finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in Heat 2 with times of 1:53.29 and 1:53.68, while Cash Obando placed second in Heat 4 in 1:56.67. Ethan Florez (1:58.68) and Brandon Day (1:59.49) also competed in Heat 3 of the event.

In field events, Cytres Vives placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 55.45m (181-11) and cleared 1.99m (6-6 ¼) in the high jump. Diego Herrera-Vendrell recorded a mark of 46.22m (151-7) in the hammer throw.
