Long Beach State is looking for a historic victory, matching one other program that has won four straight Big West Championships dating back to 1970.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The postseason starts for No. 28 Men's Golf this coming Sunday, the first of three days at the Big West Championship as Long Beach State searches for a historic victory at La Quinta Country Club.
The champions of the Big West in each of the last three seasons, Long Beach State is trying for a historic four-peat, matched only by Fresno State in a run in the late 80s running through 1991. The Beach enters the tournament as the highest-ranked team in the field, having won two tournament championships in the fall and placing in the Top 5 in all 10 tournaments the team has competed in this season.
Senior Alejandro de Castro Piera leads the team and the lineup in the midst of an excellent season. The senior has rapidly climbed the individual rankings, and is now No. 28 in the nation following a recent stretch where he was the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate champion, the runner-up at both the R.E. Lamkin Invitational and the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate, and placed in the Top 10 in a 160-golfer field at The Goodwin.
Senior Jaden Huggins will play second. Huggins owns the second-best stroke average on the season for Long Beach State, and has a trio of Top 5 finishes already this season. Graduate Steen Zeman will play third, following an outstanding season that has seen the returner finish in the Top 20 six times, with his best coming in a runner-up finish at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational. Senior Jack Cantlay has the team's second-most rounds in the 60s behind de Castro and the most in his career at the Beach, always a threat for a low round in the fourth slot in the lineup.
Showing off the team's depth, the reigning Individual Medalist from the 2025 Big West Championship will play fifth. Krishnav Chopraa shot a first-round 63 at La Quinta on the way to a wire-to-wire victory in the championship last season. Riding that success, Chopraa has four Top 20 finishes in 2025-26, including a Top 10 finish the last time out from Phoenix.
Norwin Gohm will serve as the team's alternate. The sophomore competed as an individual at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate, shooting two straight rounds in the 60s to start the tournament, two of six rounds under par among 12 played this season.
Played once again at La Quinta Country Club, live scoring will be provided by the conference through SCOREBOARD at https://scoreboard.clippd.com/tournaments/240005/scoring/team. The tournament will feature a round each day starting on Sunday, May 3 and ending on Tuesday, May 5.
