Lina Apodaca was 3-for-3 with a walkoff double for Long Beach State.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore Lina Apodaca had another monster game to finish off a huge weekend against UC Santa Barbara, going 3-for-3 with a walk and 3 RBI in support of a complete game from Isabella Alonso as the Beach finished off a sweep of the Gauchos with a 9-1 win in five innings.
Long Beach State (24-16, 12-6 Big West) wasted no time in getting started on Sunday. After a 1-2-3 inning from Alonso in the first, Apodaca got the offense started with a base hit, and with two on, scored on a double from Avery Weisbrook to put the Beach on the board first. An error from UC Santa Barbara (23-20, 13-5 Big West) allowed two more runs to score, and the Beach had a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
The only run for the Gauchos came in the second as Emily Carr hit a solo home run, but that was just one of four hits allowed from Alonso over five innings of work, and the senior quickly recovered with three outs. The Beach then pushed the advantage back to three runs as Priscilla Iniguez hit a sacrifice fly to score Jiselle Hernandes in the bottom half.
Audree Mendoza singled to start the fourth inning for LBSU and scored on a double from Apodaca to make the score 5-1, and then the Beach ended the game early in the bottom of the fifth.
Three singles from Weisbrook, Sepulveda and pinch hitter Elissa Guerrero loaded the bases with one out, and a hit batter increased the lead to 6-1. Another station-to-station single from Kali Su'e added one more while keeping the bases loaded.
Apodaca delivered one last time, hitting a double down the right field line that easily scored two runs to end the contest via the mercy rule, 9-1, as the Beach finished off a sweep of UC Santa Barbara, who had entered the weekend with just two conference losses.
Long Beach State finishes their current homestand with a great test, hosting No. 8 UCLA on Wednesday night. Tickets are sold out for that game, but live coverage will be available on ESPN+ beginning at 6 p.m.
