The Beach held a lead after four innings, but a huge seventh inning for the Bruins led to the lopsided score.
No. 8 UCLA (39-5) jumped out to an early lead. Megan Grant hit a solo home run in the first inning and the Bruins added two more to lead 3-0 after the first inning, and then a grand slam from Jordan Woolery put the Bruins up 7-0 after two innings.
Long Beach State (24-17) showed their fight once more though, rallying back against the Bruins, all with two outs in the third. Lina Apodaca sparked the rally as a hit batter, and the two walks loaded the bases. Avery Weisbrook brought home two with a single.
A walk to Nina Sepulveda loaded the bases once more, and then a single from Elissa Guerrero cut the lead to 7-4. A triple by Audree Mendoza cut the lead to one, and then Kali Su'e singled in her second at-bat of the inning to tie the game at 7-7.
Lindsey Cowans worked a scoreless fourth, and the Beach pushed in front. Apodaca again got the Beach started with a double, and with the bases loaded, back-to-back singles from Sepulveda and Guerrero put the Beach in front 9-7.
With the bases loaded in the fifth, Kate Barnett picked up a clutch strikeout, but a lineout was dropped allowing two runs to score and tie the game, flipping the momentum. A bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly scored two runs in the sixth, and then a second grand slam made the score 15-9 in favor of the Bruins.
Turning to the last arm in the bullpen, Audrey Lopetegui closed out the sixth, but struggled in the seventh. The freshman was not helped by four errors in the inning, as the Bruins added 12 more in the seventh to lead to the final score of 27-9, the most runs allowed by the program and the largest margin of defeat.
Long Beach State resumes Big West play this weekend, facing Cal Poly on the road for three games beginning on Saturday, April 18.
