Junior Avery Weisbrook became the seventh player in program history to hit three doubles in one game.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Long Beach State went on the road and took both sides of a doubleheader at Cal Poly, piling up 13 runs on 21 hits over the two games.
Long Beach State (26-16, 14-6 Big West) got to work immediately in game one. Lina Apodaca and Priscilla Iniguez got the Beach going with back-to-back singles, and then a single from Brooklyn Lee added the first run of the game. A double from Avery Weisbrook scored one more, and then a single from Elissa Guerrero made the score 3-0. A sacrifice fly from Audree Mendoza plated Weisbrook and LBSU led 4-0 before Cal Poly (10-29, 4-16) came to bat.
The Mustangs settled in behind the arm of reliever Kaylee Davis, and Cal Poly pulled back a run in the bottom of the third with a Maddy Bermudez double after a leadoff single by Kiara Blanchard. Isabella Alonso was equally excellent however, and held the Mustangs to just that one run until the Beach added some insurance in the seventh.
Apodaca worked a leadoff walk, and then back-to-back doubles from Lee and Weisbrook made the score 6-1 in favor of the Beach. Alonso then finished off the fourth complete game of her season, and the first of seven innings by closing out the Mustangs in the seventh for a game one win.
Game two featured more of the same as the Beach jumped out to an early lead. Apodaca reached on an error, and a single from Iniguez and a walk loaded the bases. Weisbrook opened the scoring with a sac fly, and then a two-run double from Nina Sepulveda gave the Beach a 3-0 lead.
That was plenty of support for the staff, as Lindsey Cowans rolled through 3.1 innings, allowing just two baserunners, before turning the ball over to Jailynn Banda in relief.
Long Beach State added an insurance run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Weisbrook, and then with the top of the order up in the seventh again the Beach added more. Apodaca and Iniguez singled to put on a pair, and with the bases loaded, a double from Sepulveda added two more with a single from Elissa Guerrero making the score 7-0.
Banda also worked 3.1 innings, while Kate Barnett came on for the final out. Iniguez had three hits in game two, and Weisbrook finished the day with five hits in six total at-bats, hitting three doubles in the opening game before going 2-for-2 with a pair of sacrifice flies in the second. Weisbrook became the seventh player in program history to hit three doubles in a game, matching a program record.
The series finishes with one final game on Sunday, April 19, starting at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
