Freshman Elissa Guerrero hit a solo home run in the ninth to push the Beach into the lead.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior Kate Barnett threw five innings of scoreless relief, and freshman Elissa Guerrero gave the Beach the run they needed with a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning as Long Beach State finished off a road sweep at Cal Poly with a 3-2 win.
Cal Poly (10-30, 4-17 Big West) struck first to change the script of big first innings for the Beach in the series. Kaylee Davis held the Beach without a hit through the first two innings, and the Mustangs scored in the bottom of the second. Cal Poly started the inning with two straight singles, and then after a sacrifice, a short single put runners on the corners with one run in.
Long Beach State (27-16, 15-6 Big West) got out of the inning with no further damage, and took their own lead in the top of the fourth. Brooklyn Lee singled to start the inning, and after a sacrifice bunt, Nina Sepulveda extended her team RBI lead with another clutch hit, tying the game. The freshman then stole second, a key base as she would come home to score on an RBI double from Audree Mendoza as LBSU took a 2-1 lead.
Cal Poly tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, as Myleigh Cooper doubled to start the inning, and the Mustangs pushed the run across with a bunt and a sac fly to even the score at 2-2.
Kate Barnett entered for Long Beach State at that point and was in command the rest of the way. Throwing five scoreless innings, the junior matched a season-high with three strikeouts, and worked around any trouble on the way to the win.
Guerrero's solo home run with one out in the top of the ninth was just what the Beach needed, the third home run of the season for the freshman, as Long Beach State took a 3-2 lead. Barnett then set down the Mustangs in order in the bottom of the ninth, including a strikeout of Maddy Bermudez to finish the game.
Long Beach State remains on the road and will face league leaders Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 24.
