Sophomore Priscilla Iniguez hit her fifth home run of the season in the loss.
FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton took an early lead and held on for a 4-2 win to open a three-game rivalry series against Long Beach State on Friday evening in Fullerton.
Cal State Fullerton (33-12, 20-2 Big West) opened the scoring, taking advantage of an outfield error to bring across the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Sarah Coccillos. Nina Sepulveda singled and reached third on an outfield error from the Titans, but the Beach were unable to even up the score as the Titans led 1-0 through one.
With that exception, Long Beach State (27-18, 15-7 Big West) starter Lindsey Cowans worked cleanly through the lineup for the first time through, but in the third, Sarah Perez slapped for a single and Colby McClinton followed with a two-run home run to extend the Cal State Fullerton lead to 3-0.
Priscilla Iniguez extended her team lead in home runs with a solo bomb in the top of the fourth as Long Beach State battled back to cut the lead to two runs. The Titans pushed across a run in the bottom half, working around a leadoff single after a double from Kate Verhoef.
The Beach added a run in the top of the sixth on an error from Verhoef that allowed Kali Su'e to score as a pinch runner, but Trischa McCleskey was able to get out of the inning with no further damage. The Titan junior finished off the complete game to collect the first win of the series.
The series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in Fullerton. The opening game will be on broadcast television nationally on ESPNU, with the second game live on ESPN+.
