Cal State Fullerton rallied for a final game win to take the series against the Beach.
Long Beach State (27-20, 15-9 Big West) scored first in the opening game. Despite loading the bases in the first, the Titans kept LBSU off the board, but the Beach rallied with two outs in the second. Audree Mendoza hit a single to extend the inning, and then scored as Lina Apodaca put on pressure with a bunt and the throw from Cal State Fullerton (35-12, 22-2 Big West) starting pitcher Eva Hurtado sailed into the outfield.
Cal State Fullerton answered directly back, putting runners on the corners. Long Beach State was able to throw out pinch runner Sophia Newcomb at second, but the lead runner came home on the play to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Then, taking advantage of an error, a slap single from Sarah Perez scored two more in the second.
The Titans added three more runs of insurance in the fourth, taking advantage of another Long Beach State error in support of Eva Hurtado, who worked around four walks to Apodaca and Weisbrook to hold onto the lead.
Long Beach State scored two in the top of the sixth. Nina Sepulveda was hit, and then a single from Kali Su'e put two runners on for the Beach. A single from Audree Mendoza and a double by Apodaca scored both runners to cut the lead to 6-3. A two-run home run from Elissa Guerrero then cut the lead to one at 6-5, but Trisha McCleskey finished off the save for the Titans.
Apodaca continued her hot hitting, starting the second game with a double. After a walk to Priscilla Iniguez, Guerrero singled to start the scoring, and then a double from Brooklyn Lee made the score 2-0 in favor of the Beach. A walk and an RBI single from Emily Dowden added one more, and then a two-run single by Jiselle Hernandez closed out a five-run first inning for the Beach.
Guerrero hit her second home run of the day, a two-run shot in the second inning, as the Beach added to their edge. The Titans then used the long ball to pull back in the bottom half, pushing across two runs and then adding three more on a three-run home run from Colby McClintock.
Cal State Fullerton then pushed into the lead in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff walk, a pair of infield singles scored one run, before a misplay tied the game, moving Sarah Perez to third. The Titans shortstop then scored on a sacrifice fly, moving the Titans in front 8-7.
McCleskey then finished off the game, holding the Beach off the board as Long Beach State out-hit the Titans in the finale but could not cash in a tying run.
Long Beach State will finish the regular season at home, hosting CSUN for a three-game series at the LBSU Softball Complex. The Beach will host a single game with the Matadors on Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m. before closing the regular season with Senior Day on Saturday, May 2.
