The senior hit six straight birdies as part of a 6-under 64 to climb to the top spot with one round remaining.
STANFORD, Calif. – Alejandro de Castro Piera hit six straight birdies on the way to a six-under par 64 on the second day of The Goodwin, and the senior took over the top spot on the leaderboard among the 160 golfers with one round to play.
Day Two Results
The senior started the day in the Top 10 and after going even par through his first nine holes, de Castro went on a heater, making six straight birdies on holes two through seven to finish the day with a 64, moving to -9 for the tournament and holding onto a one stroke lead over Kihei Akina from BYU and Mesa Falleur from New Mexico.
Jack Cantlay had a solid round, putting up 16 pars to finish with an even 70, second-best on the day for the Beach, while yesterday's team leader, Steen Zeman, remained in the Top 20 in a tie for 13th after a 72, leaving him at -3 after two rounds. Jaden Huggins had the team's final counting score, a 73.
Collectively as a team, Long Beach State was one-under on Friday and finished the day one stroke behind the co-leaders BYU and UCLA in what is shaping up to be a very close battle between five teams on the final day. Long Beach State and the hosts are tied for third, while New Mexico is one stroke back of the Beach and Stanford in fifth.
With Long Beach State one stroke back in the team competition and de Castro holding a one-stroke lead on the individual leaderboard, there will be plenty for LBSU to play for on the final day of action at The Goodwin.
