Strong Second Half Leads The Beach Past UCSD On The Road, 19-11

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Up 9-7 at half, No. 8 Long Beach State put together a 10-4 second half over No. 16 UC San Diego to secure another conference win on the road, 19-11.
Elisa Portillo paced the offense with a team-high four goals as four different players added hat tricks on the night, and Polina Synystsia recorded nine saves while adding three steals.
No. 16 UC San Diego (8-10, 2-3 Big West) found the back of the net first, leading early before No. 8 Long Beach State (10-9, 3-1 Big West) mounted a 3-0 run to take control after a powerplay goal from freshman Angeliki Arroyo, leading 3-1. The Tritons answered as both teams traded penalty goals, but the Beach finished with the advantage in the first, 4-3.
Three goals under two minutes for the Beach set the tone of the game as the Beach led 7-3 with six minutes left in the second quarter after Daniela Quinzada, Elisa Portillo and Lucy Miszewski all added their second goals of the day.
UCSD fought back, stopping a penalty shot and capitalizing with the Munatones sisters, scoring three out of the four goals by the Tritons in an intense second quarter. Elyana Goren and Zelma Koka both added late goals as the Beach led 9-7 at half.
Long Beach State put together a strong start to the second half, scoring three unanswered goals to lead 12-7. The Tritons stopped the Beach run, scoring quickly on a powerplay to cut the margin, 12-8. A big stop from Polina Synytsia led to Portillo's fourth of the day on a counter, making it a five-goal game. Both teams traded goals before Miszewski countered wire to wire for another goal on the night, 15-9 with one quarter remaining.
The Tritons were forced to keep the game close, scoring back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 16-11, but a strong finish for Long Beach State with a 3-0 run sealed the win on the road, 19-11 over UCSD.
