Avery Weisbrook had two hits to lead Long Beach State against the Wildcats.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Long Beach State jumped out to an early lead, but No. 14 Arizona responded with a big inning of their own on the way to a 12-2 win over the Beach. The Beach finished the Hillenbrand Invitational with a 3-2 record for the weekend, with their only two losses coming to the hosts, Arizona.
Long Beach State (12-8) after getting shut out in the first meeting with No. 14 Arizona (17-5) got off to a good start in the rematch. Lina Apodaca singled to start the game, and Avery Weisbrook followed with another hit to put two on.
Priscilla Iniguez then hit Long Beach State's third single in a row to score Apodaca and put runners on the corners. A perfect squeeze then allowed Weisbrook to score, giving the Beach a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.
The Wildcats showed their class in the bottom half, as the Beach couldn't get their shutdown inning. A pair of infield singles were followed by a bunt single as Tayler Biehl beat out the throw, loading the bases. Squeezing Beach starter Isabella Alonso, the normally very accurate Alonso issued three walks around a fielder's choice, bringing in three runs, and after a pitching change, a Jenna Sniffen single made the score 5-2. The Wildcats then scored three more runs in the inning with the help of an error to take an 8-2 lead.
A two-run home run added more runs for Arizona in the second inning. The Wildcats then added two more runs in the fourth, finishing their weekend of hosting with five run-rule wins. Weisbrook finished with a pair of hits, going 2-for-2 to lead the Beach.
After three weeks away, Long Beach State returns to the LBSU Softball Complex for a busy week. The Beach hosts San Diego State on Wednesday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. and then opens up conference play with a three-game series against Cal State Bakersfield beginning on Friday night under the lights.
