Women’s Water Polo Kicks Off Big West Play Hosting Two Key Matches

The Beach will open the conference calendar facing No. 16 UC Davis on Friday night.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 10 Long Beach State will start their Big West campaign hosting a pair of key matches at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center, starting with No. 16 UC Davis on Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 5 Hawai'i on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Picked to finish second in the preseason poll, Long Beach State (7-8, 0-0 Big West) will host UC Davis (8-9, 1-0 Big West) in their conference opener. The Beach had a bye week after competing at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, dropping three matches against top 15 teams in the nation. Senior Elisa Portillo leads LBSU this season with 39 goals and 27 assists. Lucy Miszewski follows with 30 goals and 25 assists. Both Rita Gurri and Chiara Amoroso have added 25 goals so far this year. In cage, freshman Polina Synytsia has 88 saves, five steals and two assists.
The Aggies faced UC Santa Barbara this past week to start Big West play, defeating the Gauchos 14-6 at home. Sadie Henry and Ashley Wallin led UCD with a pair of hat tricks each, while Gianna Nocetti and Wallin recorded a team-high three assists. Leading the Aggies this season is Bridget Miller with 47 goals, and Kelly Hungerford has a team-high 43 assists. On defense, goalkeepers Eva Stein and Lucy Holand have split time in the cage, combining for over 230 saves.
The second opponent of the weekend will be Hawai'i (7-3, 0-0 Big West), which will open its conference slate at No. 9 UC Irvine before facing the Beach. The 'Bows also took part in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, defeating UCI and Fresno State while dropping their first-round game to No. 4 California. Leading UH is Agatha Weston with 25 goals, followed by Ariadna Temprano Xambó with 21. Goalkeeper Daisy Logtens has recorded 67 saves and added eight steals so far this season.
