Long Beach State scored seven runs in the sixth to tie Saint Mary’s, but the Gaels held on for the win.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Long Beach State showed their trademark fight in both games, but big early deficits in both games proved to be too much in a pair of losses Sunday to Oregon State and Saint Mary's to wrap up the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Isabella Alonso worked two quick innings, but ran into trouble in the third. Two infield singles and a hit batter loaded the bases for Oregon State (8-8), who scored one run on a bloop single to right field and then a grand slam from Tristian Thompson put the Beavers in front 5-0.
Looking to press back, Long Beach State (9-6) brought back a run in the top of the fourth. Avery Weisbrook worked a walk, and after moving to second on a ground out, scored on an infield single by Kali Su'e.
More heads up play led to another run in the next inning. After a walk to Dowden, Miranda Gonzalez grounded out in a fielder's choice, but stole an undefended second base to move into scoring position, coming home and a single from Lina Apodaca.
The Beach threatened again in the sixth, loading the baes, but reliever Bailey Murray retired pinch hitter Elissa Guerrero to keep the score 5-2. Oregon State added an insurance run in the bottom half, and closed out the game by retiring the side in order in the seventh.
Saint Mary's (Record) got off to a quick start in the second game, as back-to-back home runs from Sam Buckley and Braxton Brown after an infield single gave the Gaels a 3-0 lead. A pair of errors around a triple from Hannah Ferguson scored three runs, and then Buckley's second home run of the game made the score 7-0.
Nina Sepulveda started a rally for Long Beach State in the third, singling and then scoring after two more hits from Apodaca and Weisbrook. Ella Thurman limited any further damage, however, and kept the Beach to just the one run. Dowden hit a two-run home run to chip away more at the lead in the top of the fourth after a single from Terrones.
Saint Mary's responded with two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth, opening up a 10-3 lead over Long Beach State, but the LBSU grit wasn't done. With one out, Terrones singled to start a rally, and Dowden walked to put two on. A single from Elissa Guerrero scored one, and the Beach was on their way.
An infield single from Jiselle Hernandez added one more, and then a hit batter loaded the bases. A wild play scored two more on a ground ball in the infield to make the score 10-7. A single from Weisbrook then left two on in front of Priscilla Iniguez. The sophomore then hit her third home run of the season, tying the game at 10-10.
Long Beach State picked two outs in the bottom of the sixth around traffic, but the Gaels pushed across one run and then a two-run home run from Victoria Castillo made the score 13-10. Saint Mary's then finished off the top of the seventh to hold on for the win.
Long Beach State will play one more tournament, with five games scheduled at the Hillenbrand Invitational beginning on Thursday, February 26.
