Beach Softball Splits Two Run-Rule Games From Tucson

Long Beach State defeated Howard before falling to the hosts No. 16 Arizona.
Long Beach State (10-7) got rolling right away in the top of the first inning against Howard (6-9). Avery Weisbrook got the rally started with a single, and after a walk to Priscilla Iniguez, a double from Malayna Terrones scored a pair, and aggressive running from the junior moved the outfielder to third. That would be key as Nina Sepulveda followed with a sacrifice fly to score Terrones, and the Beach took a 3-0 lead in the first.
Going back to work in the second, Emily Dowden was plunked and scored on a double from Miranda Gonzalez. After moving to third, Gonzalez then scored on an RBI groundout from Weisbrook to increase the edge to 5-0.
Nina Sepulveda's third home run of the season gave the Beach another run in the third. Back-to-back hits from Lina Apodaca and Weisbrook put two in scoring position for the Beach in the fourth, and Apodaca scored on an error to pull the Beach within one run of the mercy rule.
The Beach picked up two quick outs in the bottom of the fourth, but a pair of errors extended the inning and Howard took advantage, scoring two runs on a high chopper to second with the bases loaded to make the score 7-2.
A double from Audree Mendoza and a pair of walks loaded the bases for the Beach in the top of the sixth, and an error, along with an RBI groundout, brought home all three runs as LBSU finally pushed their lead to eight runs.
A standup triple from Weisbrook made the score 11-2, and Jailynn Banda finished off the game in the circle for the Beach in the bottom of the sixth for the second run-rule win of the season for the Beach.
Against No. 16 Arizona (13-5), Long Beach State threatened early. Apodaca singled and Weisbrook walked before a defensive miscue loaded the bases with no outs. The Wildcat defense rallied, however, throwing out Apodaca at the plate on what would have been a sacrifice fly without a perfect throw, and Rylie Holder was able to get out of the inning with no damage.
Taking the momentum from that play, Arizona went to work in the bottom of the first. With two infield singles to start their half, the Beach grabbed a first out, but a double followed by a pair of home runs each scored two runs as Arizona took a 6-0 lead after one.
Another home run in the second added two more runs. Long Beach State had multiple baserunners in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings, but Arizona closed out the victory in five innings for the first run-rule loss of the season for Long Beach State.
Weisbrook went 1-for-2 with a walk against the Wildcats, going 5-for-7 combined with a double and a triple across Friday's two games.
Tournament play from Arizona continues for Long Beach State on Saturday with two more games. The Beach will face Howard again starting at 10 a.m., followed immediately by a game against Minnesota. Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege.
