Beach Falls On Final Day Of Barbara Kalbus Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. – Despite an incredible showing by junior Chiara Amoroso with a season-high five goals, No. 7 Long Beach State fell in the first Black and Blue Rivalry game of the season as No. 11 UC Irvine secured a 15-13 win for seventh place at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
Grace Cuozzo put Long Beach State (7-8) on the board right away to give LBSU the first of three leads in the opening period. Chiara Amoroso's first goal of the game gave the Beach a 3-2 lead, but UC Irvine (4-9) scored two late goals to take its first lead of the game at the buzzer, 4-3.
Tied at six in the second period, the Anteaters mounted a three-goal run to earn a 9-6 lead before Amoroso cut the margin for the Beach to trail 9-7 at halftime.
Amoroso continued her momentum to put the Beach back in the game early in the third, but again the 'Eaters had a quick response. Daniela Quinzada answered for the Beach, while back-to-back goals by UCI gave the Anteaters another three-goal lead, 12-9, at the end of the third period.
UCI controlled its advantage in the final period, responding to LBSU's goals and opening a 15-11 margin with four minutes left. The Beach shortened the gap with goals from seniors Elyana Goren and Elisa Portillo, but the hosts secured the 15-13 win and seventh place at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
The Beach will have a bye week and return to the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center to host its first two conference games, facing No. 16 UC Davis on February 27 and No. 5 Hawai'i on March 1.
