Women’s Water Polo Continues On the Road For Bridgitte Donner Daws Memorial Tournament

The Beach will face three ranked opponents and play an exhibition in Berkeley.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 6 Women's Water Polo will continue on the road as the team travels to Northern California for the Bridget Donner Daws Memorial Tournament, formerly known as Cal Cup, facing top ranked No. 1 Stanford on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by an exhibition match against the USA Academy at 5 p.m. On Sunday the Beach will face Big West opponents No. 16 UC Davis at 9:30 a.m. and No. 3 UCLA at 2 p.m.
Long Beach State (4-0) started the season at the Titan Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, with a perfect record, winning all games. The Beach scored 20 or more goals in every game, defeating CSUMB, 25-6, No. 21 San Diego State, 23-16, Biola, 20-7, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 21-5.
Leading LBSU on the weekend was standout senior Elisa Portillo, scoring 20 goals on the weekend and moving to third in program history in goals scored with 197. Portillo had a season-high six goals against the Eagles with a perfect night of shooting. The senior also added nine assists and seven steals on the weekend.
Sophomores Gaby Patenaude and Rita Gurri also had impactful performances. Patenaude scored 14 goals on the weekend while Gurri had perfect accuracy, scoring 11 goals on 11 attempts. Senior Lucy Miszewski debuted for the Beach with an impressive team-high 17 assists to go along with 10 goals and 11 steals.
The first opponent for the Beach at the Bridget Donner Daws Memorial will be the defending national champions, Stanford. The Cardinal (1-0) opened their season at home defeating No. 17 UC Davis (2-1), 20-7, led by Olympians Jenna Flynn with five goals and Juliette Dhalluin with three. After facing the Cardinal, the Beach will play an exhibition game against the USA Academy.
On the second day of the tournament the Beach will face Big West rivals the Aggies, as well as No. 3 UCLA. UCD opened their season with two wins against Santa Clara, 22-3, and Fresno Pacific, 28-1, and dropped the match against top ranked Stanford. Meanwhile the Bruins will start their season at the Bridget Donner Daws Memorial.
