
Long Beach State Splits On Day 2 Of The Triton Invite

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State split the second day of the Triton Invite as the team suffered their first loss of the season against No. 10 San Jose State, 14-12, and defeated George Washington 19-8 to close the second day of competition.
The first match of the day was the first of the season against a ranked opponent for the Beach as San Jose State (2-0) started the season ranked No. 10. The Spartans got on the board first, but Long Beach State (3-1) answered quickly with freshman Zalán Nagy scoring his first of the game. SJSU got two quick goals to finish the first quarter ahead, 3-1 over the Beach.
Caleb Francisco and Gabi Acosta tied the game for Long Beach State with less than a minute in the second quarter. The Spartans answered back before senior Toring Stanley tied the game once again. Both teams traded goals as Acosta and Nagy added to the board, and both teams went to halftime tied at 6.
The Spartans capitalized right away, but sophomore Harper Stewart tied it once again. SJSU pushed a 4-0 run over the Beach to gain momentum in the match and open a gap with under two minutes left in the third. Acosta added his third of the game to shorten the lead, but SJSU added a late goal to head into the final eight minutes up 12-8.
In the last quarter, the Spartans added another goal before LBSU scored three unanswered goals with back-to-back penalty shots by Francisco and an extra-player goal by Corbin Stanley. SJSU stopped the Beach run with a goal as Acosta added his fourth of the day, but the Beach wasn't able to score again, losing their first game of the season, 14-12.
In the afternoon contest, the Beach started from behind again, down 3-1 with four minutes of play. Acosta netted his first of the game to shorten the George Washington lead before the Revs answered back. Francisco and Acosta scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 4, but GW answered back quickly to take the lead again. Artur Diaz scored on a buzzer beater as LBSU trailed 6-5 after the first quarter.
A five-goal run by Long Beach to start the second quarter gave the team momentum and control of the game, opening a 10-6 lead. George Washington got one on the board before Sandro Pueyo and Harper Stewart scored two more for the Beach. A late goal by the Revs finished the first half, 12-8 in favor of Long Beach State.
The Beach left George Washington scoreless in the second half of the game with Acosta adding two more to the scoresheet, and Marc Frigola, Toring Stanley, Michael Soybel, Corbin Stanley, Stewart, and Konstantinos Kapragkos all scoring once.
The Beach will close the weekend with two more games at the Triton Invite, facing Pomona-Pitzer at 9:20 a.m. and No. 20 Navy at 1:20 p.m.
