Men’s Water Polo Closes The Triton Invite With Two More Wins

The Beach scored over 100 goals on the weekend to kick off the 2025 season.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Gabi Acosta scored nine goals across two wins for Long Beach State as the Beach closed the Triton Invite with two victories, defeating Pomona-Pitzer 24-10 and No. 20 Navy, 13-11.
In the morning, No. 6 Long Beach State (5-1) defeated the Sagehens, 24-10 to start the day at UCSD. Senior Botond Hajdu got the Beach on the board right away before Pomona-Pitzer added their first of the day. Acosta netted back-to-back goals to give the Beach a two-goal lead, but the Sagehens bounced back with two of their own to tie the game. Acosta's early hat trick gave LBSU the lead after the first quarter, 4-3.
Acosta picked up where he left off and added another goal to open the second quarter. Pomona answered back, but a 6-0 run by Long Beach State led by a hat trick from sophomore Corbin Stanley put the Beach in a comfortable position heading into halftime, 11-4.
Early in the third quarter, LBSU carried the momentum and graduate Jason O'Donnell added his first of the season to continue the run. Acosta and Artur Diaz both added a goal to extend the lead until the Sagehens finally stopped the 9-0 run. Seniors Alec Johnson and Itai Roth netted goals to help the Beach secure a ten-goal lead with one quarter left, 17-7.
Sophomore Keegan Moore added a hat trick in the third to lead the Beach offense to another efficient quarter, winning 7-3 and defeating the Sagehens, 24-10. Sophomore Sergi Ramon recorded a career high of 10 saves and a steal.
In the last game of the weekend, the Beach held off a late comeback by No. 20 Navy (1-4) to take the final win of the weekend, 13-11. Corbin Stanley got things going for Long Beach State before Navy answered back. Senior Alec Johnson put one in on an extra-man opportunity as the Beach took a 2-1 lead after the first eight minutes.
Navy tied the game quickly in the second, but Acosta and Sandro Pueyo scored to put LBSU ahead again. After trading goals, sophomores Konstantinos Kapragkos and Harper Stewart extended the Beach lead to 7-4. A late goal by Navy turned it into a two-goal game once again.
The third quarter saw a lot of action from the Beach with Acosta adding three more to his tally and Stewart completing his hat trick. Long Beach State opened a four-goal lead heading into the last quarter, 12-8.
Sophomore Artur Diaz scored on an extra-man opportunity to give the Beach more cushion. A late surge by Navy at the end of the game cut it to a two-goal margin after three unanswered goals. The Beach held off the rally to take their second win of the day, 13-11. Goalkeeper William Whitstone recorded nine saves and added three steals in the match.
The Beach will continue on the road as they face No. 2 USC (4-0) next Friday at 5 p.m. and visit Chapman (0-2) on Saturday at 11 a.m. Both games will be livestreamed, Friday on Overnght and Saturday on FloSwimming.
