Long Beach State broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth with a four-run rally
Kyle Ashworth doubled to lead off the game for the Dirtbags. He moved up a base when Nathan Cadena walked. Alex Champagne's grounder to second advanced the runners a base. Armando Briseno's sacrifice fly to right plated Ashworth. Matt Toomey hit a grounder to second.
Manoah Chapman's throw pulled Andrew Rivas off the first base bag, keeping the inning alive and scoring Cadena. Toomey stole second before Nolan Milliman walked Connor Charpiot. Trotter Enright's opposite-field single through the left side scored Toomey. Milliman struck out Conner Stewart to end the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Kellan Montgomery walked Chapman. Landon Nunes, the cleanup hitter, ran the count to 3-2 before his hit down the left field line was just out of Toomey's reach, resulting in a double and a run for the Highlanders. David Gibbs grounded out to second for the final out.
Jacob Badawi doubled to the left-center gap to begin the bottom of the second. Montgomery struck out Tyson Reis before David Whittle doubled to center to score Badawi. Diego Boardman popped up to second for the second out. Leadoff hitter Robert Pitts tied the game with a blooper to right center that drove in Whittle. He gambled and turned the hit into a double.
Toomey's double began the top of the third. The first Joshua Torres pitch to Connor Charpiot was wild, allowing Toomey to head to third. Charpiot's grounder to first allowed Toomey to return the lead to the Dirtbags 4-3.
Reis doubled to begin the bottom of the fourth. Whittle popped out. Boardman hit a slow roller to Enright at second. The freshman came up throwing for the out as Reis went to third. Pitts singled through the left side to tie the game at four. Rivas singled through the left side to bring up Chapman, who hit a chopper in the infield. Enright fielded the ball and threw to first for the final out.
Briesno walked to lead off the top of the fifth. Toomey doubled down the left field line to push Briseno to third. Charpiot doubled to left to drive in both runs putting the Dirtbags on top again. Enright followed with a double to right center to plate Charpiot. Marco DeGirola became the fourth UCR pitcher of the night, relieving Joshua Martinez. Stewart lined out to center before Jake Evans singled to third base. Ashworth's sacrifice fly to right scored Enright.
Montgomery allowed a two-out base runner for the third consecutive inning, walking Gibbs in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Gebb entered in relief to face Badawi. The UCR leftfielder flew out to Ashworth down the right field line.
Evans' single led off the top of the eighth. He advanced to second on a Brent Godina wild pitch. Godina, the sixth UC Riverside pitcher of the game, walked Ashworth. Cadena grounded into a fielder's choice at second, leaving runners on the corners for Long Beach State. Champagne walked to load the bases. Justin Estrada became the seventh pitcher for the Highlanders. His first batter was Briseno, who saw his sacrifice fly to correct score Evans. Toomey struck out to end the frame.
Estrada walked the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth. With Ashworth coming to bat, UCR called in Chris Lozano, a lefty, to face the left-handed hitting Ashworth. Ashworth singled through the right side and plated two runs. Cadena singled to short center and loaded the bases again. Champagne's sacrifice fly made it 12-4 for the Dirtbags. Briseno grounded out to end the inning.
Evans led the Dirbags as he went 3-for-4. Toomey had two hits and three runs scored. Enright was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Ashworth and Cadena also posted two hits. Charpiot drove in three runs.
The first five UC Riverside base hits were doubles. UCR ended the game with seven, none after the fifth inning. Pitts led the Highlanders by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two walks.
