Geiss strikes out a career-high nine; Four LBSU hitters record two hits

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Long Beach State clinched its Big West series Saturday night at UC Riverside as the Dirtbags defeated the Highlanders 6-3.

The first four Dirtbags in the top of the first reached on base hits, resulting in two runs. Connor Charpiot's sac fly with one out plated the third run of the inning.

Owen Geiss walked Robert Pitts to begin the bottom of the first. Andrew Rivas' hit-and-run single up the middle advanced Pitts to third. Geiss recorded back-to-back strikeouts of Jacob Badawi and Landon Nunes. David Gibbs grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice for the final out.

Trotter Enright led off the top of the fourth with an opposite-field double to left. Jake Evans attempted to sacrifice him to third. Rivas, the first baseman, fielded the ball. He threw to Manoah Chapman at first. Chapman dropped the ball, allowing Enright to make it 4-0.

Gibbs singled to center with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Gibbs stole second with the count 1-2 to Chapman. Chapman ran the count to 3-2 before Geiss struck him out looking. Tyson Reis reached on a Nathan Cadena error to give the Highlanders runners on the corners. David Whittle lined out to Kyle Ashworth in right field for the third out.

Charpiot doubled with two outs in the top of the fifth. Reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week Matthew O'Brien walked Enright. UCR went to the bullpen for Marco DiGirola. Jake Evans, his first batter, singled through the left side to plate Charpiot for a 5-0 advantage. A 1-2 DiGirola fastball was wide and went to the backstop, advancing the runners up a base. DiGirola hit Stewart on the 2-2 pitch, loading the bases. Ashworth singled to left, scoring Enright, but Evans was thrown out at the plate for the final out.

Diego Boardman singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, a Badawi bloop single advanced Boardman to third. Nunes' opposite-field single to left scored Boardman. Gibbs grounded out to first to end the frame.

Cadena's walk began at the top of the sixth. Charlie Dohemann, the third pitcher of the game for UCR, hit Alex Champagne to bring up Armando Briseno, who flew out to right. With the left-handed hitting Matt Toomey coming up, the Highlanders went to lefty Jaxon Byrd. With the count 0-2, both runners attempted to advance on a Byrd wild pitch. Cadena was safe at third, but Champagne was thrown out at second. Byrd struck out Toomey for the third out.

Geiss pitched into the eighth inning, resetting his career high with eight strikeouts. Nunes led off the eighth with an opposite-field double to the left-center gap. Geiss struck out Gibbs for his ninth of the game. With the count 3-2, Chapman's opposite-field single to right scored Nunes. Ashworth tracked Reis' shot to the warning track right for the second out. Whittle smacked a 1-0 Geiss fastball to the centerfield fence and an RBI. After a career-high 132 pitches, Geiss was relieved by lefty Jakob Russell. UCR sent up a righthanded pinch-hitter, Ethan Bergan. On Russell's second pitch, Bergan flew out to left for the third out.

Briseno doubled to begin the top of the ninth. Toomey's bunt attempt resulted in a base hit and runners on the corners for the Dirtbags. Kurt Marton relieved Byrd to create a right-right matchup against Charpiot. Toomey went to second on a Marton wild pitch with the count 1-2 to Charpiot. The Highlanders brought the infield in as the count went to 3-2. Charpiot's fly ball to left wasn't deep enough for Briseno to attempt to score. The infield remained in against Enright. The freshman second baseman worked the count to 2-2 before striking out. Evans grounded out to second on Marton's first pitch to end the inning.

LBSU closer Albert Roblez came on to begin the bottom of the ninth. Roblez struck out Pitts on three pitches. It took two pitches for Roblez to get Rivas to ground out to short. It took Roblez four pitches to strike out Badawi to end the game.

Ashworth, Briseno, Champagne, and Evans combined for eight of the 13 Long Beach State hits (two each). Geiss won his sixth game of the year, only walking one in 7.2 innings of work.

Long Beach State (21-27, 14-15 Big West) and UC Riverside (16-32, 5-21 Big West) conclude LBSU's final Big West series of the 2025 season Sunday afternoon. ESPN+ coverage begins at 1 p.m.
