The Dirtbags Shutout UCR To Sweep The Highlanders

Conner Stewart was 2-for-3 as Josh Donegan and Albert Roblez combined on a five-hitter

RIVERSIDE, Calif.Josh Donegan and Albert Roblez combined on a five-hitter as Long Beach State shutout UC Riverside 2-0 to complete a Big West baseball series sweep Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex.

David Gibbs reached on an infield single to begin the bottom of the second. Jacob Badawi's bloop single to center pushed Gibbs up a base. Jayden Lopez's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners up a base. David Whittle hit a grounder to Jake Evans at third. The freshman came home, throwing to Conner Stewart to get Gibbs out. Diego Boardman put a bunt down in front of Donegan. Donegan fielded the ball cleanly and threw onto first to end the UCR frame.

UC Riverside (16-33, 5-22 Big West) starter Joshua Martinez allowed one hit in 2.1 innings. In a predetermined staff day, the Highlanders' Friday night starter, Nolan Milliman, came on in the top of the third and worked around a Stewart hit to get out of the inning.

Robert Pitts overcame an 0-2 start to work out a walk. He stole second on the first Donegan pitch to Andrew Rivas. Rivas's grounder to shortstop allowed Pitts to reach third. The Dirtbags brought the infield halfway in against Manoah Chapman. Donegan went up 0-2 against Chapman before the count ran to 3-2. Donegan won the battle, striking out Chapman looking. Landon Nunes ran the count to 2-2 before flying out to left to end the inning.

Donegan hit Lopez with a 0-2 fastball with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Ashworth kept the scoreless when he made a diving catch on a Whittle liner in right field for the third out.

Milliman walked Charpiot on four pitches to begin the fifth. Trotter Enright walked on a 3-2 Milliman fastball. Joshua Torres relieved Milliman. His first batter was Jake Evans, whom he hit with a 2-2 fastball to load the bases. Stewart popped out to right as the runners could not advance. Torres got what he was looking for, as Ashworth hit into a 4-6-3 double play with the count 3-2.

Matt Hudson started the sixth for the Highlanders. Nathan Cadena tripled off the right field wall to get the inning underway. UCR brought the infield against Alex Champagne. The Dirtbags center fielder flew out to left, but the ball wasn't deep enough for Cadena to attempt to score. The infield remained in against Armando Brisenio. Brisenio hit a grounder to Hudson as Cadena broke for home. The Highlanders caught Cadena in a rundown, resulting in a 1-2-5 putout.  With Matt Toomey at the plate, Hudson picked Briseno off at first for the final out.

Roblez relieved Donegan to begin the sixth. With one out, Nunes singled to center. Roblez struck out Gibbs for the second out. Badawi grounded out to third to wrap up matters.

Enright singled to third with two outs in the top of the seventh and went to second on a throwing error. He was left in scoring position when Hudson got Evans to ground out to end the inning.

Roblez walked Lopez to begin the bottom of the seventh. Whittle fouled off his first sac bunt attempt. On his second, he popped the ball up to Charpiot at first. He threw back to Enright covering the bag for a double play. Boardman reached on an error but was thrown out attempting to steal to end the inning.

Stewart began the top of the eighth with a single up the middle. Ashworth singled to right center to advance Stewart to third. Cadena's sacrifice fly to right scored Stewart for the lead.

Roblez walked Pitts to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Pitts attempted to steal second on the first pitch to Rivas. Stewart threw down, catching his second Highlander to attempt to steal in the game. Roblez got the next two outs to keep the score 1-0.

Toomey led off the ninth with his second home run of the season, a blast over the right field fence to make it 2-0. Roblez retired the Highlanders 1-2-3 in the ninth to post his fourth victory of the season.

Donegan allowed four hits over the first five innings. He struck out two and walked one. Roblez limited the Highlanders to one hit during his four-inning stint. He struck out one and walked two. Stewart was 2-for-3 to lead the eight-hit LBSU attack.

At 15-15, the Dirtbags will await the final week of Big West play May 15-17 to see if Long Beach State qualifies for the five-team Big West Championships that will be played May 21-25 at Cal State Fullerton.

Long Beach State (22-27) returns to Riverside Tuesday night on a season-high six-game winning streak when the Dirtbags face California Baptist (28-24). ESPN+ coverage begins at 6 p.m.
