Jake Evans hit a grand slam home run as Matt Toomey went 3-for-4

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—California Baptist ended Long Beach State's six-game winning streak Tuesday night, defeating the Dirtbags 9-7 at Totman Stadium.

Matt Toomey singled through the right side with one out in the top of the second. CBU (28-25) starter Alfredo Capacete hit Luke Taylor to bring up Trotter Enright. The freshman second baseman's opposite-field single to left loaded the bases. Jake Evans' third home run of the season was a grand slam over the left field fence, giving Long Beach State a 4-0 lead. Efren Ortega's single through the right side chased Capacete in favor of Carsen Olsen.

Olsen walked Kyle Ashworth. With runners on first and second, right fielder Julian Alvarez made a diving catch of a Nathan Cadena liner. He came up throwing and doubled off Ortega at second to complete the double play to end the inning.

Ben Castelli doubled off Van Larson with one out in the bottom of the second. Ryan Kim reached on an error to give the Lancers runners on the corners. Larson struck out Cole Howarth on a 3-2 breaking ball for the second out. With the count 1-0 on Julian Alvarez, Kim and Castelli attempted a double steal. Kim was thrown out 2-6-3, but Castelli scored before the out was made, creating a 4-1 score.

Toomey returned the lead to four with two outs in the top of the third when he hit his third home run of the season, an opposite-field blast to left center field.

Trevor Spainhoward reached on the second LBSU error of the game with one out in the bottom of the third. Chris Ramirez lined out to left field. Nick Dumesnil walked. Andrew Walters lined out to right field for the final out.

Jake Brown's home run to left center began the bottom of the fourth for the Lancers. Kim reached on an infield single with one out. Howarth singled up the middle. Pinch-hitter Connor Ross grounded out to second. Spainhoward singled to right center to score two runs. Ramirez flew out to left for the third out.

Dumensil led off the fifth with an infield single, advancing to second on an Evans' error. Walters flew out to left. Brown walked as Dumensil took third on Larson's ball four. The Dirtbags got out of the inning on a 4-6-3 double play.

Tyler Gebb relieved Larson with one out in the bottom of the sixth. He struck out Howarth before walking Ross. Cadena committed the fourth LBSU error of the game when his throw was high on a Spainhoward grounder at shortstop. With the count 1-1, Ramirez fouled off six consecutive Gebb pitches. He won the battle when his infield single scored Ross. Dumesnil lined out to Ashworth on the right-field warning track to keep the score tied.

Ortega walked to begin the top of the seventh. David Vizcaino, the fifth CBU pitcher, retired the next two Dirtbags before Champagne's single to right center sent Ortega to third. California Baptist again went to the bullpen, calling in Ryne Palmer to face Charpiot. Charpiot grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to quiet the threat.

Cristien Banda relieved Gebb to start the seventh and walked Walters after getting ahead 0-2 in the count. Brown's infield single resulted in runners on first and second. With the count 2-2, Castelli singled up the middle to score Walters. Banda hit pinch-hitter Matt Chavez to load the bases. Jake Fields replaced Banda. The freshman righty was the second pinch-hitter of the inning, the lefthanded-hitting Carter Eberhard. Fields walked Eberhard for a 7-5 score. A Fields' wild pitch made it 8-5.

The Dirtbags brought the infield in as Ross ran the count to 3-2 before Fields struck him out. The infield remained in against Spainhoward, who walked on five Fields pitches. Ramirez increased the lead to four with a sacrifice fly to Toomey at the warning track in left field. Fields struck out Dumesnil, looking to put an end to matters.

Toomey led off the top of the eighth with a double. Enright singled through the left side with one out. California Baptist's eighth pitcher of the game, Noah Smith, relieved Sam Burgess for a right-right match up against Evans. Smith walked Evans to load the bases, resulting in a new pitcher entering in Jacob Wilson. Armando Briseno pinch-hit for Ortega. Dumesnil attempted to make a diving catch on his blooper. The ball dropped, and he picked it up and threw it to second for a force out and an RBI.

Ashworth singled up the middle to score the sixth LBSU run. Cadena came up with runners at first and second. Pinch-runner Justin Roulston attempted to advance on a Wilson pitch in the dirt and was thrown out at third to end the inning.

Brown worked out a walk off Long Beach State reliever Jakob Russell in the top of the eighth. Castelli singled and took second on the throw that attempted to throw Brown out at third. Russell hit Chavez to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Brock Wirthgen struck out on a 3-2 Russell fastball. With a right-handed batter coming up in Kenny Winters, LBSU called in Alex Ramos. Winters lined out to short for the third out.

Toomey went 3-for-4 with three runs to pace the Dirtbags.
