LBSU pitchers combine a three-hitter in the loss, striking out 11
CORVALLIS, Ore—No. 7 Oregon State defeated Long Beach State 2-1 in a pitchers' duel Thursday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field
Canon Reeder gave the Beavers their only runs when he homered in the bottom of the second.
Oregon Starter Eric Segura retired the first seven LBSU hitters he faced before hitting Conner Stewart with one out in the top of the third. Segura retired the next two Long Beach State batters to get out of the inning.
Segura carried a no-hitter into the sixth when he walked Kyle Ashworth with two outs. Segura hit Nathan Cadena on a 3-1 fastball to give the Dirtbags two runners on for the first time. Alex Champagne broke Segura's no-hit bid with a single through the right side that scored Ashworth. Kellan Oakes relieved Segura, getting Connor Charpiot to fly out to right field to end the inning.
Armando Briseno singled down the right field line with one out in the top of the seventh. Oakes walked Trotter Enright before Oakes induced Stewart into a 1-4-3 double play to quiet the Dirtbags.
Jake Fields, a redshirt freshman, reset his career high with eight strikeouts over the first five innings before being relieved by Ka'imi Kahalekai to begin the bottom of the sixth, who retired the Beavers in order. Kahalekai battled Easton Talt to an 11-pitch at-bat, resulting in a Talt walk.
Tyce Peterson attempted to bunt Talt over. Enright, the second baseman, charged in, fielding the ball and throwing it to Cadena, the shortstop at second, for the out. Pinch-hitter Jacob Krieg walked. With Trent Caraway coming up, the Dirtbags called in closer Albert Roblez. Roblez struck out Caraway for the second out. Roblez struck out Aiva Arquette to end the inning.
Gavin Turley singled through the left side to lead off OSU's eighth. Wilson Weber, the current NCBWA National Player of the Week, flew out to center. Turley stole second on the first Roblez pitch to AJ Singer. Singer worked out a five-pitch walk. Reeder successfully sacrificed both runners up a base with a bunt to third. Roblez struck out Talt for the final out.
Wyatt Queen came on in the top of the eighth for Oregon State. He earned the save by retiring the final six LBSU batters of the game.
The pitching staffs combined to strike out 20 (11 for Long Beach State, nine for Oregon State) and allow only five hits (three for Oregon State, two for Long Beach State).
