Enright goes 2-for-2 with two RBI to lead Long Beach State
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State evened its Big West baseball series against UC Davis Saturday night when the Dirtbags defeated the Aggies 4-1 at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
The Aggies took the lead in the third on Tyler Howard's two-out RBI single.
UC Davis threatened in the top of the fourth, putting runners on the corners with two outs. LBSU starter Owen Geiss got Ryan Lee to ground out to second to end the inning.
Geiss issued back-to-back walks to Houston Hirschkorn and Alex Gouveia to begin the fifth. Geiss struck out Howard. Mark Wolbert flew out deep enough to center to allow Hirschkorn to advance to third. Braydon Wooldridge flew out to right for the third out.
Aggies' starter Ned Futchey faced one above the minimum through four innings. Kyle Ashworth singled but was thrown out, attempting to steal third with one out in the first. Trotter Enright walked with two outs in the third but was stranded on base when Ashworth grounded out.
Matt Toomey broke Futchey's momentum with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fifth. Futchey steadied himself by getting Nathan Cadena to fly out to short right. The Aggies brought the infield in against Easton Elliot. Elliot hit a grounder to Hirschkorn at first. With Toomey breaking for home on the play, Hirschkorn threw home. The throw was high, allowing Toomey to score and Elliot to head to second.
Conner Stewart's bunt attempt resulted in an infield single and runners on the corners for the Dirtbags. Elliot appeared to have been injured on the play, resulting in Jake Evans coming in to pinch-run for him at third. Enright's opposite-field single through the left side scored Evans. Futchey retired the next two LBSU batters to keep it a one-run game.
Josh Donegan relieved Geiss to begin the seventh. Hirschkorn reached on an infield single to begin the inning. Gouvela's sac bunt pushed Hirschkorn to second. Howard attempted to bunt for a base hit. The attempt resulted in a sacrifice that allowed Hirschkorn to go to third. Wolbert lined out to right field to end the frame.
Evans hit his second home run of the season, a shot over the centerfield fence, over 400 feet away, off UC Davis reliever Noel Valdez. Stewart followed with a single up the middle. With the count 2-2 to Enright, a Valdez pitch went to the backstop, allowing Stewart to reach second. Enright doubled to the right-center gap to score Stewart.
Wooldridge walked to begin the top of the eighth. Donegan struck out Nick Leehey. Cadena ran down Evan Gentil's high fly from his shortstop position in short left for the second out. Jaxon Murphy singled to center. Pinch-hitter Zach Story popped up to first to end the inning.
Down 0-2, Gouveia singled to left with one out in the top of the ninth. Donegan struck out Howard for the second out. Evans made a diving catch of a Wolbert foul ball down the third base line to end the game.
Enright was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Stewart also had two hits (2-for-3). Geiss charted his fifth win of the season, tossing the first six innings. Donegan earned his first save, scattering three hits over the final three innings. Murphy was the top UC Davis hitter, as he was 3-of-4.
