Charpiot's 10th Inning Single Sends The Dirtbags Past UC Davis 5-4

5/4/2025 5:08:00 PM | Baseball

LBSU tied the game with four runs in the eighth to send it to extras

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Connor Charpiot's one-out RBI single in the top of the 10th capped off a furious late-inning Long Beach State comeback as the Dirtbags defeated UC Davis 5-4 on LBSU's Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

The Aggies (22-25, 9-15 Big West) loaded the bases with no outs at the top of the first, thanks to an LBSU error, a hit, and a walk. Nick Leehey fouled out to third for the first out. Jake Fields struck out Evan Gentil for out number two. Fields struck out Alex Gouveia to end the inning.

Kyle Ashworth led off the bottom of the first with a single and went to second on a Matt Barnes wild pitch. With one out, Alex Champagne walked. Charpiot lined out to left before Matt Toomey struck out for the third out.

Braydon Wooldrige's single started the Aggies' third. Tyler Howard walked. Jaxon Murphy walked to load the bases. Alex Ramos relieved Fields. His first batter was Leehey, who hit a grounder to Jake Evans at third. Evans threw home for the first out. Conner Stewart, the LBSU catcher, threw to first to complete the double play. Gentil lined out to left to keep the game scoreless.

Barnes limited the Dirtbags to one hit through the first four innings before giving way to Tyler Wood. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Evans doubled off the wall in left-center field. Zach Story nabbed Stewart's line at third for the second out. Ashworth grounded out to second for the final out in the frame.

Ka'imi Kahalekai relieved Ramos to start the sixth for the Dirtbags. After retiring the Aggies in order, he gave up a single to Riley Acosta to begin the seventh. Kahalekai hit Houston Hirschkorn to bring up Story, who walked to load the bases. Wooldridge's sacrifice fly to center brought Acosta for the game's first run. Howard walked to reload the bases.

With the lefthanded-hitting Murphy coming to bat, Long Beach State called in lefty Van Larson to face the UC Davis right fielder. LBSU brought the infield in as Murphy worked the count to 3-2 before striking out on a Larson breaking ball. With Leehey coming up, the Dirtbags returned to the bullpen, having Tyler Gebb, a righty, face the righthanded-hitting UC Davis cleanup hitter. Leehey hit a ball to Cadena at short. His only play was to second, but his throw didn't make it time, allowing the second run to score. Gentil popped out to first for the final out.

Gouveia singled through the left side to lead off the top of the eighth. Acosta reached on an infield single to first. A Long Beach State error on the play allowed Gouveia to reach third. With the LBSU infield in, Hirschkorn hit a ball deep enough to left to score Acosta. Pinch-hitter Mark Wolbert doubled down the right-field line to score Acosta. With runners on second and third, Jakob Russell relieved Gebb in a lefty-lefty matchup against Wooldridge. Wooldridge's sacrifice fly to center made it 4-0. Howard struck out, looking to end the inning.

Evans opened the bottom of the eighth with a double to right. Murphy misplayed the ball, allowing Evans to reach third. Stewart grounded out to second, which allowed Evans to score. Ashworth doubled to right center. After Wood struck out Briseno, Champagne walked. Ashworth broke for third on the play and was able to complete the steal despite the Aggies' throw down to second. Charpiot walked to load the bases.

On Wood's first pitch, Toomey singled through the left side to drive in Ashworth and Champagne. Charpiot headed to second as Rowen Barnes relieved Wood. Cadena's opposite-field single to right scored Charpiot to tie the game. Toomey took third while Cadena went to second on the throw home. Trotter Enright struck out to end the inning.

Cristien Banda came on in relief for the Dirtbags to start the ninth. Leehey singled with one out. Banda struck out Gentil looking to earn the second out. Gouveia singled to center before Acosta struck out as the score remained tied at four.

Evans walked to begin the ninth. Stewart's sacrifice bunt attempt was unsuccessful as he struck out on four pitches. Ashworth hit into a 4-6-3 double play to send the game to extra innings.

Hirschkorn walked to lead off the top of the 10th. Ryan Lee hit a grounder to third for the first out as Hirschkorn advanced to second. Wooldridge grounded out to second as Hirschkorn went to third. Howard was intentionally walked to bring up the lefthanded hitting Ethan King to face Banda, a lefty. With the count 1-2, Howard went to second on a wild pitch. Charpiot made a diving catch on a King popup to wrap up matters.

Champagne singled with one out in the bottom of the eighth. With the count 2-1 to Charpiot, Champagne stole his team-leading 13th base of the season. At 2-2, Charpiot recorded the game-winning hit, scoring Champagne.

Ashworth, Champagne, and Evans combined for six (two each) of the nine Long Beach State hits. Acosta was 3-for-5 with two runs scored to pace the Aggies. Banda's two innings of relief earned him his first win of the season (1-1). Barnes fell to 1-2.

Long Beach State (18-27, 12-15 Big West) hosts No. 14 UCLA (34-13) Tuesday night. ESPN+ coverage of the final home game of the 2025 regular season begins at 6 p.m.
