Ashworth and Toomey each record three hits to lead LBSU
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Nick Leehey's lead off home run in the 15th inning proved to be the difference as UC Davis defeated Long Beach State 1-0 Friday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Long Beach State starter Kellan Montgomery walked the first two UC Davis batters of the top of the first. The Aggies' leading hitter, Braydon Wooldridge, hit into a 6-3 double play as Tyler Howard took third. Leehey fouled out to retire the Aggies first.
Kyle Ashworth began the bottom of the first by hitting Bryan Green's first pitch to leftfield for a single. Ashworth advanced to second on a Riley Acosta passed ball. He went to third on an Alex Champagne grounder to second. Nathan Cadena flew out too short. Green got out of the inning when Connor Charpiot fouled out to third.
Back-to-back two-out singles from Houston Hirschkorn and Acosta resulted in runners on the corners for the Aggies. Alex Gouveia hit into a 6-4 fielder's choice to end the frame.
Matt Toomey hit an opposite-field double to the left-center gap with one out in the LBSU second. Conner Stewart walked. On Bryan Green's ball four, the ball got away from Acosta for a wild pitch that allowed Toomey to move up a base. Toomey was off on contact of Easton Elliot's 2-2 pitch from Green. He hit the ball back to the lefty; Green threw home to get Toomey at the plate for the second out. Trotter Enright grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice for the final out.
Howard opened the third with a single up the middle. Montgomery struck out Zach Story. Wooldridge reached on an infield single that bounced off Montgomery's glove on the mound. Leehey flew out to Champagne at the centerfield warning track for the second out. Jason Hanson hit a grounder to Enright at third. He stepped on the third base bag for out number three.
Green retired six in a row before Armando Briseno singled up with middle with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Toomey hit a ball to Hirschkorn towards first.
