Beach Tennis Finishes Home Slate With Dominant Win

4/9/2025 4:37:00 PM | Women's Tennis

Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello closed her time at the Rhodes Tennis Center with a dominant win, symbolic of a tremendous 28-year career at the Beach.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – In a brisk two hours in front of a great collection of fans, alumni and friends to celebrate an epic career, Long Beach State's tremendous freshmen group put on a show in a 7-0 win over UC Riverside to wrap up the home schedule for 2024-25 Beach Tennis.

Having previously announced her retirement and without any seniors, the match served as a great opportunity to celebrate Jenny Hilt-Costello's final home match in a 28-year career at Long Beach State. The nine-time Big West Coach of the Year has a 429-203 overall record, and closed out her time Wednesday afternoon in a facility that she helped build, maintain, and win multiple championships inside.

The young squad from Long Beach State (13-5, 5-3 Big West) did not falter in their portion of the celebration against UC Riverside (4-17, 0-8 Big West). The Highlanders were missing their freshman star Ramey Yu, and were forced to forfeit a pair of matches after only fielding five players.

With that handicap, the class of the Beach quickly came to show. Thea Jagare and Johnanna Hiesmair moved to the top flight in doubles where they won 6-2 over Kei Kato and Chloe Vu, and Diana De Simone and Daria Malaescu were 6-1 winners in the second flight over Condevillamar/Shahbazi to quickly take a 1-0 lead.

The singles forfeit gave the Beach a quick second point, with Cecilia Costa quickly following in a 6-2, 6-1 win in the second flight against Kato. Pamela Badillo clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Condevillamar, and the sweep was neatly finished as De Simone, Malaescu and Jagare all also won in straight sets, with Jagare's 6-3, 6-4 win over Crystal Kim wrapping up the competition.

Long Beach State will close the regular season with the Black and Blue Rivalry against UC Irvine, facing the 'Eaters on Friday, April 18 from Irvine before taking on the Big West Championship from San Diego April 24-27.
