Three LBSU Players Record Two Hits

HONOLULU—Long Beach State clinched its second consecutive Big West baseball series Sunday afternoon as the Dirtbags defeated the University of Hawai'i 5-4 at Les Murakami Stadium.

The first two hitters in the Hawai'i lineup reached on opposite-field singles to left in the bottom of the first. Matthew Miura attempted to sacrifice the runners, but he fouled his bunt off into the glove of LBSU catcher Efren Ortega. Ben Zeigler-Namoa singled to right to drive in Shunsuke Sakaino for the game's opening run. Kamana Nahaku attempted a safety squeeze bunt. The LBSU starter, Owen Geiss, fielded the bunt and threw home to Ortega for the second out. Jared Quandt grounded out to first to end the frame.

Ortega's opposite-field single to right began the Dirtbags' third. Easton Elliot's successful sacrifice bunt pushed Ortega to second. Kyle Ashworth reached on a Shunsuke Sakaino error at second as Ortega reached third. Alex Champagne hit a grounder to Sakaino, who threw to Jordan Donahue at short for the second out. Champagne's headfirst slide into first was successful as Ortega scored to tie the game.

UH starter Cooper Wallis hit Armando Briesno to bring up Connor Charpiot, who walked to load the bases. Matt Toomey hit a grounder to Donahue, playing the shift behind the second base bag. Donahue committed an error on the play, allowing two runs to score. Nathan Cadena flew out to right for the final out.

Quandt walked with one out in the bottom of the fourth. He stole second on Geiss' second pitch to Draven Nushida. Nushida grounded out to first, allowing Quandt to reach third. Geiss hit Kedren Kinzie to put runners on the corners. Geiss went to a 3-2 count against pinch-hitter Aidan Kuni before walking the lefthanded batter to load the bases. Sakaino flew out to left to keep it 3-1.

Miura reached on a one-out Long Beach State error in the bottom of the fifth. Zeigler-Namoa singled up the middle with a count of 3-0 to advance Miura to second. Nahaku went up in the count 3-1 before hitting into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Quandt doubled to left center field to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Nushida walked on four consecutive Geiss pitches. Kinzie successfully sacrificed the runners up a base. With pinch-hitter Itsuki Takemoto coming to bat, Tyler Gebb relieved Geiss. With the count 2-2, Takemoto hit a liner to second. The runners froze as Elliot bobbled the ball. Quandt broke for home. Elliot recovered and threw to Ortega, who tagged Quandt out. Sakaino hit a shot down the right field line, which Charpiot knocked down. He threw to Gebb, beating the speedy lead off hitter for the final out.

Gebb walked Quandt with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Gebb bounced back to strike out Nushida. Pinch-hitter Jack Salmon struck out, looking to end the inning.

Ortega doubled to the right-centerfield gap with one out in the top of the ninth. Elliot singled to center, earning the Dirtbags runners on the corners. An Ashworth chopper through the right side scored Ortega and sent Elliot to third. UH closer Isaiah Magdaleno struck out Champagne for out number two. Armando Briseno singled through the left side to drive in Elliot. Charpiot grounded back to Magdaleno to conclude the inning.

Leading off the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter Will Bowen hit an 0-2 Gebb fastball over the rightfield fence to make it 5-2. Sakaino singled up the middle. Donahue's blast was tracked down in right center by Ashworth for the first out.

Ka'imi Kahalekai entered for the second day in a row to attempt to close out the Rainbow Warriors. His first batter was Miura, who walked on four consecutive pitches. Zeigler-Namoa reached on an infield single to first to load the bases. Nahaku pop-up to second was ruled as an intentional fly, automatically making it the second out. Down in the count 0-2, Quandt's opposite-field single to left center drove in two runs. Kahalekai went up 0-2 against Nushida. He threw a ball in the dirt before striking him out with a fastball.

Briseno, Elliot and Ortega all recorded two hit games for the Dirtbags. Geiss improved to 4-5 on the year, while Kahalekai earned their second consecutive save. Zeigler-Namoa charted three of the seven Hawai'i (22-8, 9-6 Big West) hits.

Long Beach State (12-17, 6-9 Big West) travels to No. 14 UCLA (25-6) Tuesday night. Coverage on Big 10+ begins at 6 p.m.
