The Bruins limited Long Beach State to two hits
LOS ANGELES—No. 10 UCLA defeated Long Beach State 12-1 in seven innings Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Jarrod Hocking's one-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the second gave the Bruins the lead.
Dean West led off the third with an infield single. Roch Cholowsky hit a grounder to short where Armando Briseno threw towards Jake Evans at second. The ball went off Evans' glove, allowing West to score the third UCLA run. Mulivai Levu singled to right as Cholowsky rounded third. He ran through the sign to stop and was thrown out 9-3-5 for the first out.
Roman Martin and AJ Salgado recorded back-to-back doubles to drive in the fourth and fifth UCLA runs. With Van Larson on in relief, Delgado stole third and scored on a Blake Balsz double for the fourth run of the inning.
UCLA starter Ian May retired the side in order in the first three innings before giving way to Josh Alger to begin the fourth. With two outs, Briseno broke up the no-hitter and hit his fifth home run of the season to make it 6-1.
Taking advantage of an error and a wild pitch, UCLA scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take a seven-run advantage. The Bruins scored four times with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to further extend the advantage.
The Dirtbags threatened in the top of the seventh as LBSU used a pair of walks and a hit batsman to load the bases. UCLA's sixth pitcher of the game, August Souza, struck out Efren Ortega to end the game via the 10-run mercy rule.
Balsz was 2-for-2 to lead the Bruins. The UCLA pitching staff combined on a two-hitter.
Long Beach State (12-18, 6-9 Big West) resumes Big West action Friday night when the Dirtbags welcome Cal State Bakersfield (12-21, 6-6 Big West) to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. The action on ESPN+ begins at 6 p.m.
