All six runs come via home runs for Long Beach State

PHOENIX— Arizona State defeated Long Beach State 17-6 Wednesday night in the baseball series finale at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Kyle Ashworth singled off Wyatt Halvorson's second pitch of the game to lead things off for the Dirtbags. Halvorson hit Alex Champagne. With one out, Connor Charpiot hit his first home run of the season to give the Dirtbags a 3-0 lead.

After getting the first out of the bottom of the first, LBSU starter Alex Ramos hit Landon Hairston before walking Matt King and Jacob Tobias to load the bases. Nu'u Contrades doubled down the line to score Hairston and King. Tobias took third on the play. Down 0-2 in the count, Kien Vu singled to right center to drive in both baserunners and give the Sun Devils the lead, 4-3. Ramos hit Jax Ryan to bring up Isaiah Jackson who flew out to left.

With the count 0-1 to Brody Briggs, ASU put on a double steal. Both runners were safe. The Long Beach State catcher Dylan Jackson had his throw go down the left field line, scoring Vu. Briggs singled through the right side to plate Ryan. Walker singled to put runners on the corners. Van Larson, a lefty, relieved Ramos to face the lefthanded-hitting Hairston. Larson attempted to pick off Briggs at first, but the throw was wide, allowing both runners to move up and make the score 7-3. Hairston doubled to right to allow Briggs to score. Larson hit King with his first pitch. Tobias flew out to bring the inning to a close.

Vu singled with one out in the bottom of the second and stole second on the first Tyler Gebb pitch to Ryan. Vu stole third before Jackson homered down the right field line with two outs.

Ashworth led off the top of the third with a single up the middle. Champagne walked. Nathan Cadena hit his team-leading seventh home run to bring the Dirtbags back to within four at 10-6. Halvorson struck out Charpiot before giving way to lefty Easton Barrett to face the next two lefthanded-hitting LBSU batters, Matt Toomey and Easton Elliot. Barrett struck out Toomey before Elliot singled through the left side before Barrett struck out Jake Evans to end the inning.

Joey Iglesias took the hill for the Dirtbags in the third. Walker reached on an infield single to first and advanced to second on Charpiot's throwing error on the play. Hairston's bunt single resulted in runners on the corners. King's sac fly scored Walker. Tobias hit a shot to Evans at third. He knocked the ball down to keep Hairston at second. Contrades hit into a 6-4 fielder's choice for the second out. With runners on the corners, Vu fell behind 0-2. On the second strike, Contrades stole second.

At 1-2, Vu doubled to the right-center gap to drive in a pair and push the lead back to seven. Ryan walked as Vu stole third on ball four. Ryan stole second on the first pitch to Jackson. Jackson grounded out to second for the third out.

Briggs homered to right off Jakob Russell to begin the bottom of the fourth. The Sun Devils put runners on second and third with one out before Russell struck out the final two batters to keep ASU at bay.

Arizona State added a run in the bottom of the fifth when Vu walked, stole second and third, and scored when Jackson grounded out to second. The Sun Devils scored two in the bottom of the sixth to increase the advantage to 11.

ASU pitching retired 17 of the final 18 LBSU batters of the game. The 10-run rule was invoked upon the conclusion of the top of the seventh. The five Sun Devils' hurlers combined on a five-hitter.

Vu paced Arizona State (30-16) as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. He stole second and third in the same inning three times, resulting in a new ASU record for most stolen bases in a game with six. Walker was 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Ashworth was 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead LBSU.

Long Beach State (16-26, 10-14) returns home Friday to begin the final homestand of the regular season when the Dirtbags host UC Davis (21-23, 8-13 Big West). The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
