Long Beach State Closes Sweep At Cal State Bakersfield With Run Rule Win

Jacquelyn Bickar tied a program record with four runs scored.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Leadoff hitter Jaquelyn Bickar tied a Long Beach State school record with four runs scored, highlighting a 12-3 win in five innings as the Beach closed out a sweep on the road against Cal State Bakersfield.
The top of the order got Long Beach State (24-20, 14-10 Big West) going right of the gate. Jacquelyn Bickar worked a leadoff walk and Carly Robbins and Makayla Medellin hit back-to-back singles to score the leadoff hitter for the Beach. A single from KaLeena Gonzales loaded the bases, and a hit batter and sacrifice fly added two more for the Beach as the rally continued. A single from Savannah Magadan scored one more as the Beach took an early 4-0 lead.
Cal State Bakersfield (16-31, 7-17 Big West) added one in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of some heads up base-running from Marianna Narvaiz to pull one back but Eryka Gonzales was able to close out the inning and limit the damage.
Five walks and an RBI groundout allowed the Beach to bring home three more in the top of the second, though a tight zone materialized for the LBSU pitchers as well. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out, and the Beach nearly got out of the inning unscathed, but instead of an inning-ending double play an error allowed the Runner's to score a pair and cut the lead to 7-3.
Long Beach State kept the scoring going in the third as Bickar reached for the third inning in a row, and scored for the third inning in a row after a Carly Robbins double to add one more.
The fourth inning only continued after a 90-minute rain delay. Shannon Haddad had a pair of strikeouts to help the Beach get through the fourth. Bickar reached for the fourth time of the day on a single, and then scored on an error as the Beach kept the pressure on. Long Beach State loaded the bases, and then walks to Brooklyn Lee and Savannah Magadan added two more to make the score 11-3, and a wild pitch added an insurance run for the mercy rule before the Runners got out of the inning.
Haddad finished off the victory to grab her second win of the series, improving to 8-3 on the season. Bickar was the eighth player in program history to score four times in a game, joining head coach Kim Sowder and most recently former Big West Player of the Year Nichole Fry in 2019.
After the sweep, Long Beach State will host Cal Poly for an important final series as the Beach looks to solidify their position in the upcoming, first-ever Big West Championship for softball. The Beach starts the series with a doubleheader against the Mustangs on Friday at 3 p.m. before Senior Day and the regular season finale on ESPNU at 2 p.m. on May 3.
