Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With Cal Poly

5/2/2025 9:08:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State closes the regular season with Senior Day at 2 p.m. on ESPNU.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Pitching was the story of the first game, hitting the story of the second but the Beach was the protagonist in both, grabbing two wins to clinch a series win in the final trio of games this season from the LBSU Softball Complex.

Senior Shannon Haddad made her first start since March and was fantastic in the circle in game one for Long Beach State (26-20, 16-10 Big West). Going pitch-for-pitch with Kate Judy of the Mustangs, neither team scored in the opening seven innings as Haddad tied a season-high with eight strikeouts.

Haddad went the distance, also setting a new career-high in innings pitched as the game drifted into the 10th inning. Cal Poly (9-37, 4-22 Big West) finally broke the deadlock in the 10th, as Kiara Blanchard hit a leadoff single, and after a sacrifice, came home to score on a single from Sienna Erskine.

For the second time all game, Long Beach State got the leadoff batter on in the bottom of the tenth and went to work. After a single from Selena Perez, Jacquelyn Bickar reached as her perfectly placed bunt was mishandled, and then Carly Robbins pushed the pair into scoring position. Cal Poly elected to walk Makayla Medellin to load the bases with one out to face Priscilla Iniguez, and the freshman made the Mustangs pay with a single just outside of the reach of the shortstop Erskine, scoring Perez and Bickar to finish the game via a walkoff 2-1.

The Beach immediately capitalized on that momentum in game two, batting around in the bottom of the first inning. Loadiing the bases in front of Iniguez, the freshman delivered again with a two-run single, and then Corissa Sweet followed with another single as the Beach took a 3-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Avery Weisbrook was hit to score a fourth run. A walk to Bickar scored one more while leaving the baes loaded, and Carly Robbins cleared them with a triple, and when the throw kicked away from Mylina Garza the senior scored on the little league grand slam as the Beach took a 9-0 lead.

Emily Dowden doubled home two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Eryka Gonzales and Kate Barnett didn't need them, combining for the fifth shutout of the season as Gonzales took the win with a four-inning start, while Barnett closed out the game, ending the run-rul win with a strikeout in the fifth.

Long Beach State will honor their eight seniors Senior Day following the regular season finale against Cal Poly, which will be televised live nationally on ESPNU. It should be a great celebration leading up into the first-ever Big West Championship tournament for softball in the Big West, which the Beach has secured their place in beginning next week.
