Beach Tennis Falls At Sacramento State 4-3

Long Beach State rallied to force a winner-take-all final set, but the Hornets held on for the win.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Long Beach State nearly finished off a stirring comeback on the road at Sacramento State, but the Hornets were just able to hang on for a 4-3 win over the Beach on Tuesday.
"It was a tough start for us today but I'm so proud of the fight that we had in singles," said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello.
Sacramento State (15-2) got off to a strong start, taking the doubles point against Long Beach State (11-5). Emilija Pranyte and Lou Baudouin were 6-0 winners over Johanna Hiesmair and Thea Jagare in the second flight as the duo took their first loss of the season, and Catherine Walker and Palina Saulevich clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Paulina Franco Martinessi and Diana De Simone.
The Hornets came close to the victory with two more singles wins to take a 3-0 lead. Baudouin was a 6-2, 6-4, winner over Jagare, while De Simone fell to Hornets start Madelyn Ferreros 6-1, 6-4 in the top flight.
Long Beach State continued to battle back. Pamela Badillo won the first point for Long Beach State with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Elena Mercioiu in the fifth flight, and then at the fours Daria Malaescu won 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 against Pranyte to make the score 3-2 in the match.
The remaining matches also went to three sets. Long Beach State evened the score as Ceclia Costa had an incredible recovery, bouncing back from a first set loss in a 0-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over Catherine Walker in the second flight.
With the match coming down to the sixth flight, Daisy Carpenter rallied from a first set loss to win the second and took an early lead in the third, but Irene Riva recovered to defeat Carpenter 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 and finish the win for the Hornets.
The road trip finishes with a conference match Thursday, as Long Beach State will play at UC Davis with a scheduled start time of 1:30 p.m.
